Job summary

Smith News & Media seeks a Business Manager to translate financial data into budgets, forecasts and actionable insights that guide decisions across the company. Reporting to the Controller and department leaders, the role supports visibility into revenue, expenses, cash flow, and profitability for stronger forecasting and accountability.

You will lead annual budgeting, rolling forecasts, and 13-week cash-flow planning, while developing dashboards and KPI reporting for leadership.

Qualifications

• Ability to develop budgets and rolling forecasts with cash-flow projections.
• Strong financial analysis skills including profitability and ROI evaluation.
• Translate financial data into clear reports, dashboards, and actionable recommendations.
• Excellent communication and collaboration with department leaders to reinforce accountability.
• Disciplined attention to accuracy, confidentiality, and process improvement.

Responsibilities

• Lead annual budgeting, maintain departmental and company forecasts, and manage a rolling 13-week cash-flow forecast to identify financial risks early.
• Prepare budget-versus-actual-versus-forecast reports and conduct monthly department reviews.
• Analyze profitability across advertising, circulation, printing, digital services, and other units; perform job costing and margin analysis.
• Evaluate pricing, break-even points, staffing, vendor and capital proposals; provide ROI analysis and improvement opportunities.
• Develop financial dashboards and KPI reporting; provide updates to the Publisher and coordinate with the Controller.
