Job summary

The University of Maine School of Law seeks a founding Director for its Criminal Justice Clinic in Portland, Maine. The Director will build the Clinic from the ground up, supervise student attorneys, and train the next generation of Maine criminal-justice practitioners.

This is a full-time, 12-month visiting appointment for a term of three years, with on-site work required and grant-funded funding considerations. Salary ranges from $105,000 to $115,000 annually.

Qualifications

• J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school and eligible for Maine admission.
• Significant trial experience (7–10 years) in criminal law.
• Experience supervising or mentoring attorneys or students.
• Experience managing or coordinating grant-funded programs and budgets.

Responsibilities

• Launch and lead the Criminal Justice Clinic from the ground up.
• Supervise six student attorneys and two interns; oversee ~150 cases.
• Design and teach the weekly lawyering skills seminar and case rounds.
• Develop intake protocols and coordinate with stakeholders for community impact.
• Ensure grant compliance, data collection, and reporting to the BJA.
