The University of Maine System, hosting Maine Law’s new Criminal Justice Clinic in Portland, seeks a founding Director to build the program, supervise student attorneys, and ensure grant compliance.

The role requires leadership to launch and run a live-client clinic, oversee approximately 150 cases over three years, and collaborate with regional defense and prosecutorial partners. Salary ranges reflect qualifications and Maine context.

Qualifications

• J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school.
• Licensed to practice law in Maine or able to obtain a Maine bar license within three months of starting.
• Minimum 7–10 years of trial-level litigation experience, including substantial courtroom experience.
• Experience supervising, mentoring, or training attorneys, law students, or other legal staff.
• Demonstrated commitment to providing high-quality representation to indigent clients.
• Strong organizational skills and ability to build a new program, manage deadlines, and work independently.

Responsabilités

• Launch the Criminal Justice Clinic and align its design with Maine Law’s mission and grant goals.
• Develop intake protocols in consultation with key stakeholders to direct representation where it will have the greatest impact on the community while balancing pedagogy.
• Recruit and select the inaugural cohort of student attorneys.
• Supervise six student attorneys each fall and spring, and two paid interns each summer.
• Oversee approximately 150 cases over the three-year grant period, ensuring compliance with professional conduct rules.
• Design and teach a weekly seminar on lawyering skills and criminal procedure.
• Manage data collection and grant reporting, including semi-annual and annual performance reports.
• Collaborate with Maine Law’s other clinics and coordinate with MCPDS, DA offices, courts, and the defense bar.
