Qualifications

  • Able to read load charts, work instructions, and safety procedures.

Job description

Position Summary

The Forklift Operator / Rigger is responsible for the safe movement up to 60 ft long, loading, unloading, and positioning of materials, equipment, and fabricated components using forklifts, cranes, hoists, and rigging equipment. This position ensures all lifting and transportation activities are performed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with company policies and OSHA standards.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Operate forklifts to move materials, products, and equipment throughout the facility and yard.
  • Inspect forklifts, rigging gear, slings, chains, hooks, and lifting devices before use.
  • Safely load and unload trucks, trailers, and shipping containers.
  • Plan and execute rigging operations for lifting and moving large or oversized loads.
  • Select proper rigging equipment based on load weight, size, and configuration.
  • Attach loads using chains, slings, shackles, spreader bars, and other lifting devices.
  • Guide crane operators during lifting operations using hand signals and radio communication.
  • Ensure loads are properly secured, balanced, and transported safely.
  • Maintain accurate records of inspections, equipment usage, and material movement.
  • Assist production, fabrication, and shipping departments as needed.
  • Keep work areas clean, organized, and free of safety hazards.
  • Report equipment defects, safety concerns, and incidents immediately.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Minimum 2 years of forklift operating experience in manufacturing, fabrication, construction, or industrial environment.
  • Experience with rigging, crane operations, and material handling preferred.
  • Knowledge of rigging principles, load calculations, and lifting practices.
  • Ability to read and understand load charts, work instructions, and safety procedures.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to workplace safety.
Physical Requirements
  • Frequently lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, climb, and work in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to work around moving equipment, overhead cranes, and heavy industrial machinery.
  • Must have sufficient vision and hearing to operate equipment safely.
Preferred Skills
  • Overhead crane operation experience.
  • Experience working with large steel fabrications, structural steel, or heavy equipment.
Work Environment
  • Manufacturing, fabrication, warehouse, and outdoor yard environments.
  • Exposure to noise, dust, welding operations, and varying weather conditions.
  • Overtime and weekend work may be required based on production demands.
