Job summary

City of Round Rock, TX, is seeking a Forestry Technician to provide hands-on tree care across city parks, rights‑of‑way, and public spaces. You will prune trees, plant new ones, mulch, and monitor health with community volunteers at planting events.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • At least 1 year of experience as a forestry technician or similar fieldwork.
  • Valid Class C Driver’s License required.
  • Ability to obtain a CDL within 6 months of employment.

  • Prune street and park trees, including hazardous limb removal and storm cleanup.
  • Plant new trees and support community planting events.
  • Mulch, stake, fertilize, and water young trees using a water truck.
  • Monitor overall tree health and report concerns.
  • Install new irrigation lines, perform regular checks, and make repairs.
  • Weed, fertilize, and apply herbicides when needed.
  • Perform maintenance on vehicles and equipment twice monthly.
  • Clean, sharpen, and maintain chainsaws, power pruners, pole saws, and related tools.

About the Role

As a Forestry Technician, you’ll provide hands‑on tree care throughout City parks, rights‑of‑way, and other public properties. This role is active, engaging, and essential to maintaining a thriving urban canopy. You’ll work with a variety of tools, equipment, and even interact with community volunteers during tree planting events.

What You'll Do
Tree Care & Maintenance
  • Prune street and park trees, including hazardous limb removal and storm cleanup.
  • Plant new trees and support community planting events.

What We're Looking For
  • High school diploma or GED.

What the Work Is Like

This role is physically active and performed mostly outdoors. You should be comfortable:

  • Heavy, hands‑on outdoor work in varying weather.
  • Regular lifting (up to 100 lbs), climbing, bending, and operating equipment.
  • Use of chainsaws, chippers, trucks, bucket trucks, and more.
  • Required safety gear provided.
Physical Demands

This is a Heavy strength role. Expect to:

  • Lift and carry 50-100 lbs occasionally.
  • Bend, kneel, climb, and operate foot controls frequently.
  • Work closely with your team and communicate regularly with coworkers and the public.
Safety & Work Environment
  • Daily exposure to outdoor elements and active work sites.
  • Regular exposure to noise, vibration, physical hazards, and mechanical equipment.
  • Safety is our top priority so protective equipment is always required.
