Job summary

The City of Round Rock is seeking a Forestry Technician to maintain the urban canopy across parks and public spaces. This role is active and outdoors, using a variety of tools, and engaging with community volunteers during tree planting events.

You’ll prune trees, plant and support new plantings, monitor tree health, install irrigation lines, and perform routine equipment maintenance. A hands-on role with safety as a priority.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • At least 1 year of experience as a forestry technician or similar fieldwork.
  • Valid Class C Driver’s License required.
  • Ability to obtain a CDL within 6 months of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Tree Care & Maintenance: Prune street and park trees, remove hazardous limbs, storm cleanup.
  • Irrigation & Landscape Support: Install irrigation lines, check and repair; weed and fertilize.
  • Equipment Care: Maintain vehicles and equipment; clean and sharpen chainsaws, power pruners, pole saws.

About The Role

As a Forestry Technician, you’ll provide hands-on tree care throughout City parks, rights-of-way, and other public properties. This role is active, engaging, and essential to maintaining a thriving urban canopy. You’ll work with a variety of tools, equipment, and even interact with community volunteers during tree planting events.

What You’ll Do

Tree Care & Maintenance
  • Prune street and park trees, including hazardous limb removal and storm cleanup.
  • Plant new trees and support community planting events.
  • Mulch, stake, fertilize, and water young trees using a water truck.
  • Monitor overall tree health and report concerns.
Irrigation & Landscape Support
  • Install new irrigation lines, perform regular checks, and make repairs.
  • Weed, fertilize, and apply herbicides when needed.
Equipment Care
  • Perform maintenance on vehicles and equipment twice monthly.
  • Clean, sharpen, and maintain chainsaws, power pruners, pole saws, and related tools.
What We’re Looking For
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • At least 1 year of experience as a forestry technician or similar fieldwork.

What The Work Is Like

This role is physically active and performed mostly outdoors. You should be comfortable:

  • Heavy, hands-on outdoor work in varying weather.
  • Regular lifting (up to 100 lbs), climbing, bending, and operating equipment.
  • Use of chainsaws, chippers, trucks, bucket trucks, and more.
  • Required safety gear provided.
Physical Demands

This Is a Heavy Strength Role. Expect To

  • Lift and carry 50–100 lbs occasionally.
  • Bend, kneel, climb, and operate foot controls frequently.
  • Work closely with your team and communicate regularly with coworkers and the public.
Safety & Work Environment
  • Daily exposure to outdoor elements and active work sites.
  • Regular exposure to noise, vibration, physical hazards, and mechanical equipment.
  • Safety is our top priority so protective equipment is always required.
