Job Overview

We are seeking a social worker to support our client-centered legal team. The role involves conducting client assessments, making referrals, drafting memoranda, and collaborating with attorneys throughout the criminal case process. Our office emphasizes a team-based, interdisciplinary approach to representation.

Essential Job Duties

• Visiting correctional facilities, including Rikers Island, to meet clients and build relationships.
• Conducting trauma-informed interviews and biopsychosocial assessments.
• Interviewing collateral contacts such as family members.
• Drafting pre-pleading and pre-sentencing memoranda.
• Advocating for clients in court with attorneys, including conferences and meetings.
• Managing a large caseload with quick turnaround times.
• Making social work and community referrals.
• Assisting with or providing testimony in court hearings and school suspension hearings as needed.

Qualifications

• Licensed Master's Social Work Degree from an accredited Graduate School, or LMSW exam must be taken within six months of employment.
• Excellent persuasive and written communication skills.
• Demonstrated commitment to criminal justice, indigent defense, and/or racial and social justice issues.

Preferred Qualifications

• Knowledge of trauma, substance use disorders, mental health, and family dynamics.
• Experience in public defense social work or working with marginalized communities.
• Knowledge of forensic social work practices.
• Spanish language skills are a plus.

Salary Range: $65,000 – $90,000, commensurate with experience.
