Job summary

City of Irving is seeking a Criminalist to provide technical support in documenting, collecting, preserving, and analyzing physical evidence from crime scenes. You will assist sworn personnel with applying scientific methods to investigations, photograph and record scene details, and handle evidence with strict chain-of-custody.

You may testify in court and help with outreach. Requires a Bachelor’s degree in forensic science or related fields, with crime scene investigation/forensic analysis

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in forensic science, biology, chemistry, criminal justice, or a related science field.
  • One year of crime scene investigation or forensic analysis is beneficial.
  • Must be able to obtain a crime scene certification (IAI or equivalent) within 12 months of meeting IAI requirements for CSI certification.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical support in documentation, collection, preservation, and analysis of physical evidence from crime scenes.
  • Assist sworn personnel by applying scientific methods and forensic standards to support investigations and ensure evidentiary integrity.
  • Photograph, sketch, and digitally record scene details; process evidence for latent prints, biological material, and trace elements.
  • Maintain chain-of-custody records and prepare detailed reports; submit findings to investigators.
  • Assist with lab-based forensic processing and evidence storage; testify in court regarding evidence collection and analysis.
  • Assist with public education and departmental outreach as needed.
