- Heavy civil construction means and methods.
- Construction plans, specifications, details, and dimensions.
- Layout, survey control, line, grade, and elevations.
- Project scope, including contract inclusions and exclusions.
- Planning and sequencing daily construction work.
- OSHA and company safety requirements.
- Trenching and excavation, shoring, and Competent Person requirements.
- Rigging and safe equipment practices.
- Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) and daily risk assessments.
- Material and equipment needs for assigned work.
- T&M work and Extra Work Tickets.
- Microsoft 365, including Outlook and Word.
- iPhone and iPad applications used for daily work.
- B2W Track/Build2Win or other company field software.
Skills:
- Read and understand plans, specifications, and construction documents.
- Plan and organize daily work.
- Determine crew, equipment, material, and tool needs.
- Lay out and verify work before construction begins.
- Communicate work plans and expectations to the crew.
- Lead daily JHAs and safety meetings.
- Identify hazards and put proper controls in place.
- Assign work and clearly explain crew responsibilities.
- Coordinate work with the Superintendent, Project Engineer, Field Engineer, and other trades.
- Identify conflicts, changed conditions, scope gaps, and potential extra work.
- Inspect equipment, shoring, materials, and work areas.
- Check completed work for quality and accuracy.
- Train, coach, and develop crew members.
- Complete daily reports, timecards, T&M tickets, and production records.
- Take clear photos of work before, during, and after installation.
- Keep as-built drawings current.
- Use B2W Track and other company-required field software.
Abilities:
- Lead a construction crew safely and productively.
- Plan and coordinate daily field operations.
- Review the daily work plan with the crew before starting work.
- Ensure the crew understands the work, hazards, and production goals.
- Look ahead and plan upcoming labor, equipment, and material needs.
- Confirm layout, line, grade, elevations, and survey information before starting work.
- Ensure required materials and equipment are available when needed.
- Maintain a safe work area and correct unsafe conditions.
- Stop work when conditions are unsafe.
- Follow OSHA, company, owner, and project safety requirements.
- Coordinate work so it does not conflict with other trades.
- Recognize work outside the project scope and notify the Superintendent.
- Work with project management to solve field problems.
- Track crew hours, equipment, quantities, and daily production.
- Complete and submit required paperwork accurately and on time.
- Maintain clean and organized work areas, trucks, equipment, and Conex/storage areas.
- Attend required safety, coordination, progress, and incident meetings.
- Maintain a strong focus on safety, quality, production, and schedule throughout the projects.
Experience, Education & Skills
- Active membership in the Laborers or Operating Engineers Union is required
- 5 years' experience in underground utilities construction
- High degree of proficiency in MS Office Suite, Outlook & Excel
- Must have all necessary safety certifications (OSHA 30, Competent Person, Confined Space, CPR and thorough knowledge of the applicable safety regulations
- Strong analytical, prioritizing, interpersonal, problem-solving, presentation, budgeting, project management (from conception to completion), & planning skills
- Strong verbal and written communication skills (including analysis, interpretation, & reasoning)
- Solid understanding and application of mathematical concepts
- Ability to develop and maintain collaborative relationships with peers and colleagues across the organization, as well as internal and external clients
- Ability to work well autonomously and within a team in a fast-paced and deadline-oriented environment
- Good Driving Record
- Self-motivated with critical attention to detail, deadlines, and reporting
- Demonstrated ability to exercise discretion and independent judgment
