Summary
This position is located at the Iowa City VA Medical Center. The Food Service Worker follows set procedures in accomplishing repetitive assignments and follows established sequences of work such as working in the dish room, passing trays, portioning cold foods, and dipping hot foods.

Duties
Major duties and responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

1. Set up cafeteria lines, steam tables, dining room tables, and side service stands with hot and cold food items
2. Serve food cafeteria style by placing uniform portions of food on customers'/patients' plates
3. Break down and clean assigned area when the meal is finished and return food to the kitchen
4. Set up dining room tables for service, place food and beverages on tables, and replenish items as necessary
5. Return soiled trays and dishes to the dish room after meals
6. Deliver meal trays to the patients' bedsides
7. Brew coffee according to the number of servings required
8. Assemble and toss fresh fruit or green salads in quantity using prepared dressings and portions into standard serving sizes
9. Make cold sandwiches using prepared ingredients and pack box lunches
10. Work in one or more functional areas of the kitchen such as food preparation, dish and pot washing, dry and refrigerated storage and receiving, and the serving line
11. Sort, wash, peel and cut fresh fruits and vegetables
12. Operate and break down equipment
13. Perform heavy-duty cleaning tasks throughout the food service and related areas

Work Schedule: Rotating schedule including days, nights, weekends, and holidays.

Physical Requirements: Light to moderate physical effort; may perform heavy work like scouring large utensils, pushing carts; continuous standing and walking; frequent stooping, reaching, pushing, pulling, bending; regularly lift objects up to 20 pounds, occasionally over 40 pounds with assistance.

Working Conditions: Kitchen areas with high temperatures, humidity, noise; exposure to hot liquids, sharp blades, hot surfaces, and temperature changes.

Qualifications

Volunteer experience counts as qualifying experience. Full-time work is considered 35-40 hours/week. Part-time experience is credited proportionally.
