Job summary

The YMCA of Central Massachusetts is seeking a Food Service Staff member to help prepare nutritious meals for students under the supervision of the Food Service Manager.

Applicants should have at least a high school diploma or GED, ServSafe certification, and strong interpersonal skills to work with a diverse group of students, parents, and staff. Prior school or food service experience is preferred.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED and at least one year related experience and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Possess current ServSafe Certification.
• Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse groups.
• Able to communicate fluently in English, both written and spoken.

Responsibilities

• Under supervision, assist in preparing nutritious meals for students.
• Maintain sanitary kitchen facilities and observe health department regulations.
• Assist with inventory, storage, and rotation of supplies.
• Cook and serve meals, accommodating special diets as needed.
• Report safety or sanitary concerns to supervisor promptly.
• Represent the YMCA positively to parents, students, staff, and community.
• Maintain personal cleanliness and grooming standards.
• Attend trainings and staff meetings as required.
• Fill in for the Food Service Manager when needed.
• Perform additional duties as assigned.

Description

Under the Supervision of the Food Service manager, the Food Service Staff member helps to prepare nutritious and attractive meals for students while maintaining a clean kitchen and observing all health department regulations to create a safe and healthy work environment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

• Knowledge of Federal guidelines for Child Nutrition Program and CACFP and all applicable District, state, local and federal laws, rules and regulations and ensure compliance.
• Knowledge and follows all safety and sanitary rules and regulations related to food handling.
• Under the supervision of the Food Service Manager, maintain food service equipment, utensils, storage areas, food preparation and serving areas in a sanitary condition in compliance with current health standards.
• Inventory, verify supply delivery and accuracy and rotate into existing stock.
• Cook and serve students meals and provide help with special diets as needed.
• Report safety, sanitary, fire hazards and other concerns to Food Service Manager promptly.
• Follow and maintain knowledge of all YMCA policies and procedures.
• Maintain a high standard of personal cleanliness and proper grooming.
• Professionally represent the school and interact thoughtfully and courteously with parents, students, staff, volunteers and the community.
• Maintain appropriate certifications and attend in-service trainings and staff meetings.
• Knowledge and ability to fill in temporarily in the absence of the Food Service Manager.
• Complete additional duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• High School Diploma or GED and at least one year related experience and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience. Prior experience working in a school setting, in a food service position or with students strongly preferred.
• Possess current ServSafe Certification.
• Excellent interpersonal skills, able to work well with others from diverse backgrounds, skillful in solving conflict, maintaining confidentiality, able to make sound judgments and decisions, work independently with minimum supervision, problem solve, maintain composure in stressful situations and a great team player and positive role model for others.
• Able to communicate fluently verbally and writing in English, effectively present information and response effectively to questions one-on-one or in group setting. Able to read and interpret documents, instructions, manuals and write routine reports.
• Great mathematical skills to be able to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measures, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals and able to compute rate, ratio, percent and volume.
• General knowledge of computer usage and proficient with MS Word, Mealtime and Outlook.

Job Type: Full-Time (Non-Exempt)

Schedule: Monday-Friday 40hrs/week

Pay: $20.00/hour, with full benefit package to include, generous PTO, Medical, Dental, Life, Vision, Pet and Disability Insurance. 403b Retirement Savings account available with both pre-taxed and post taxed options, and once fully vested with the YMCA, the Y will pay into a 403a Retirement account for you!
