Job summary

Nassau BOCES is seeking part-time Food Service Helpers to assist in the preparation and serving of food in district facilities.

Under supervision, you will maintain sanitary standards, assist with food prep, cashier duties if needed, and support a team dedicated to safe, efficient service.

Qualifications

  • Ability to read and write English.
  • Basic knowledge of the proper method of serving food.
  • Basic knowledge of the principles and practices of sanitation and personal hygiene as applied to the preparation and serving of food.
  • Ability to use and care for food service equipment and appliances.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to use a cash register.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in the preparation of vegetables and meats for cooking.
  • Makes sandwiches, salads, and desserts.
  • Sets tables; fills sugar bowls and salt and pepper shakers.
  • Serves food from steam tables.
  • Clears tables of dirty dishes; washes and dries dishes.
  • Cleans tables, chairs, serving tables, and other equipment.
  • Acts as a cashier, as required.

Food Service Helper
This position is a non-competitive Civil Service position.

Nassau BOCES is seeking part-time Food Service Helpers.

General Statement of Duties

Performs various tasks involved in the preparation and serving of food; performs related duties as required.

Complexity of Duties

Under direct supervision, the duties require incumbents to maintain and adhere to sanitary standards.

Typical Duties
  • Assists in the preparation of vegetables and meats for cooking.
  • Makes sandwiches, salads, and desserts.
  • Sets tables; fills sugar bowls and salt and pepper shakers.
  • Serves food from steam tables.
  • Clears tables of dirty dishes; washes and dries dishes.
  • Cleans tables, chairs, serving tables, and other equipment.
  • Acts as a cashier, as required.
Full Performance Knowledges, Skills, and Abilities
  • Basic knowledge of the proper method of serving food.
