Food Safety/Quality Manager

Position Overview

This role is ideal for someone passionate about food safety and quality. You will leverage your expertise to develop strategies that help the organization become the Best Company in the World. Your drive for continuous improvement will motivate Members to meet the goal of producing gold standard products. You will act as a role model and educator of the Johnsonville Way, fostering this as a ‘way of life’ within the Holton facility.

Responsibilities

  • Drive strategic continuous improvement efforts related to food safety and quality risks in animal harvest and sausage processes.
  • Set success metrics, identify trends, and analyze process variations with the animal harvest/fresh sausage team.
  • Support all Johnsonville plants with corrective actions to optimize product safety and quality.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory policies concerning animal harvest, animal welfare, and meat production.
  • Participate actively in the foreign animal disease team.
  • Collaborate directly with the USDA team at the facility.
  • Coach and develop four Food Safety and Quality team members.
  • Manage the performance of a third-party sanitation contractor through your team.
  • Assist with third-party audits and internal audits to minimize risks.
  • Educate members on food safety and quality systems using your technical expertise.
  • Lead or participate in network-wide improvement teams.
  • Develop future leaders for food safety, quality, and operational roles.
  • Utilize auditing skills for supplier, copacker, and internal audits.
  • Lead capital planning and budgeting for food safety and quality initiatives.

Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Food Science, Meat Science, Microbiology, or related field preferred.

Experience

  • Minimum 5 years in a quality leadership role.
  • Experience in food processing; meat/poultry processing and harvest preferred.

Skills and Competencies

  • Strong leadership and influence skills; ability to develop team members.
  • Knowledge of food safety, HACCP, USDA/FDA regulations, animal handling, and welfare programs.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office; experience with SAP and data analysis tools preferred.
  • Understanding of SQF, microbiology, shelf life, and continuous improvement methodologies (Six Sigma, Lean).
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, project management, and team leadership skills.
