Job summary

SMC, Inc. seeks a Floor Technician to maintain floors across client facilities. You will sweep, mop, scrub, wax, and refinish surfaces while operating auto-scrubbers and buffers to keep spaces clean and safe.

The role requires following safety procedures, communicating with supervisors, and maintaining equipment logs. Reliable attendance, ability to lift up to 50 pounds, and basic arithmetic are expected.

Qualifications

  • Experience operating floor cleaning equipment such as scrubbers, buffers and burnishers.
  • Ability to read and follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Basic problem-solving and troubleshooting related to cleaning equipment.
  • Ability to use two-way radio communication when required.

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine floor care including sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, and spot cleaning.
  • Strip, wax, buff, and refinish floors as required.
  • Operate and maintain floor care equipment (auto-scrubbers, buffers, burnishers, riding scrubbers).
  • Perform carpet and upholstery cleaning using extraction equipment.
  • Inspect equipment before and after use; ensure proper operation.
  • Maintain equipment logs and refill cleaning solutions as needed.
  • Follow safety procedures and PPE requirements.
  • Report equipment malfunctions or safety concerns to management.
  • Support additional cleaning duties such as restroom detailing or entrance cleaning.
  • Maintain clear communication with supervisors and team members.

Job description

Summary:

The Floor Technician is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness, appearance, and safety of floors throughout the facility. This role performs routine and specialized floor care services including sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, stripping, waxing, and refinishing various floor surfaces.

The Floor Technician operates and maintains floor care equipment to ensure all areas remain clean, sanitary, and compliant with company cleaning standards and customer requirements.

Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Perform routine floor care including sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, and spot cleaning.
  • Strip, wax, buff, and refinish floors as required.
  • Operate and maintain floor care equipment such as auto-scrubbers, buffers, burnishers, and riding scrubbers.
  • Perform carpet and upholstery cleaning using extraction equipment.
  • Inspect equipment before and after use to ensure proper operation.
  • Maintain equipment logs and refill cleaning solutions when necessary.
  • Remove debris and ensure floors remain clean, safe, and free of dust or hazards.
  • Follow all safety procedures including proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Handle cleaning chemicals according to safety and operational guidelines.
  • Report equipment malfunctions, supply shortages, or safety concerns to management.
  • Support additional cleaning duties when needed such as restroom detailing or entrance cleaning.
  • Maintain clear communication with supervisors and team members regarding work assignments.
  • Maintain a safe, organized, and professional work environment.
  • Follow company policies, procedures, and customer site requirements.
  • Perform other cleaning or operational duties as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities:

This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.

  • Ensure proper care and use of cleaning equipment.
  • Support team operations and assist coworkers when necessary.
Required Skills / Abilities:
  • Ability to operate floor cleaning equipment such as scrubbers, buffers, and burnishers.
  • Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Basic problem-solving and troubleshooting skills related to cleaning equipment.
  • Ability to use two-way radio communication when required.
  • Must have a reliable smartphone as a condition of employment for timekeeping, employee portal access, and company communications.
Language Skills:

Ability to read and understand basic written instructions and communicate effectively with supervisors and coworkers.

Mathematical Skills:

Ability to perform basic arithmetic calculations including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division using standard units of measurement.

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to apply common-sense understanding to carry out simple written or verbal instructions.

Physical Demands:

This position requires the ability to lift between 35 and 50 pounds and push or pull loads ranging from 35 to 75 pounds.

Employees must be able to stand or walk for 6 to 8 hours per shift and frequently stoop, kneel, crawl, and bend during cleaning operations.

Work Environment:

Work is performed within customer facilities such as office buildings or industrial environments. Employees may occasionally be exposed to outside weather conditions, extreme cold, and extreme heat for short periods.
