Job summary

U.S. Air Force is seeking a Flight Surgeon to serve as the primary care physician for airmen exposed to extreme environments. You will lead a team of experts to develop preventive practices to keep our Airmen flying.

The role includes conducting medical exams, determining fitness for flight, participating in missions, and coordinating aeromedical evacuation and casualty response. Opportunities for advancement and internationally travel are part of the package.

Qualifications

• Completion of U.S. residency with board certification in a primary care specialty.
• Current primary care board certification and privileges for 12 months prior to commissioning.
• Flight physical (USAF Flying Class II) completed.
• AMP Aerospace Medicine Primary course completed.
• Completed eight-week Officer Training School.

Responsibilities

• Conduct medical examinations and provide care for air and missile crews.
• Determine fitness for flying and special duties; evaluate environments to detect health hazards.
• Participate in flying missions to observe aeromedical issues.
• Develop and manage preventive medicine programs for flight personnel.
• Establish casualty management procedures for aviation incidents.
• Advise on aeromedical evacuation and serve on aviation mishap boards.
• Liaise between flying squadrons and medical services.

Job Responsibilities

• Conduct medical examinations and provide care for air and missile crews


• Determine fitness for flying and special duties as well as evaluating living and working environments to detect and control health hazards


• Regularly participate in flying missions to observe and advise on aeromedical issues


• Develop and manage preventive medicine programs, including the education of flight personnel in healthy lifestyles


• Establish procedures for managing casualties in aviation accidents and other disasters


• Provide advise on aeromedical evacuation and serve on aviation mishap investigation boards


• Serve as the liaison between flying squadrons and medical services

Qualifications

To be considered, you must meet the following requirements:

• Completion of a U.S. residency at a fully accredited residency program with subsequent board certification in that primary specialty


• Board certification must be current and in a primary care specialty such as family, emergency, pediatrics, internal medicine or by the ABPM, and must show proof of primary care privileges for the 12 months directly preceding commissioning.


• Completion of a flight physical (USAF Flying Class II)


• Completion of the Aerospace Medicine Primary (AMP) course (~nine weeks)


• Completion of eight-week Officer Training School


• Must be a U.S. citizen between the ages of 18 and 47


• Must be willing to relocate
