Job summary

The United States Air Force is seeking a Flight Surgeon to serve as the primary care physician for aircrew and special-duty operators, leading a team to develop preventive medical practices to keep Airmen flying.

Qualifications

• Completion of a U.S. residency in an accredited program with board certification in a primary care specialty is required.
• Board certification must be current and in a primary care specialty such as family, emergency, pediatrics, internal medicine or by ABPM, and must show proof of primary care privileges for the 12 months directly preceding commissioning.
• Completion of a flight physical (USAF Flying Class II), AMP course (~nine weeks), and eight-week Officer Training School are required.
• Must be a U.S. citizen between 18 and 47 years old and willing to relocate.

Responsibilities

• Conduct medical examinations and provide care for air and missile crews.
• Determine fitness for flying and special duties as well as evaluating living and working environments to detect and control health hazards.
• Regularly participate in flying missions to observe and advise on aeromedical issues.
• Develop and manage preventive medicine programs, including the education of flight personnel in healthy lifestyles.
• Establish procedures for managing casualties in aviation accidents and other disasters.
• Provide advice on aeromedical evacuation and serve on aviation mishap investigation boards.
• Serve as the liaison between flying squadrons and medical services.
