Job summary

Joby Aviation's Flight Research team seeks a Software Project Engineer to drive execution across software and autonomy development for flight test campaigns. You will coordinate across GNC, flight software, embedded systems, simulation, GCS, and test infrastructure to prioritize work and align with program milestones.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or related technical field.
• 5+ years of experience in software engineering, project engineering, technical leadership, or technical execution for software-intensive systems.
• Hands-on software development experience or deep involvement in software architecture, implementation workflows, and technical risk.
• Ability to understand complex software systems, ask high-quality technical questions, and reason about architecture, interfaces, integration, and release risk.
• Experience organizing or driving execution in hardware-integrated or embedded environments where software delivery ties to physical test milestones.
• Strong organizational skills with experience maintaining integrated plans across multiple workstreams.
• Excellent communication skills to convey plans, risks, trade-offs, and priorities to engineers and stakeholders.
• Experience with evolving requirements and agile development in a dynamic program environment.
• Comfort with ambiguity and maintaining progress when plans shift.
• Proficiency with ClickUp, Jira, Smartsheet, or similar tools.

Responsibilities

• Own the integrated software execution plan across programs, maintaining a clear view of workstreams and milestones.
• Decompose high-level program objectives into actionable engineering work with priorities, owners, and acceptance criteria.
• Coordinate planning across GNC, flight software, embedded systems, simulation, GCS, and test infrastructure teams.
• Identify unrealistic plans, missing dependencies, ambiguous requirements, and integration risks early.
• Recommend lightweight project management processes tailored to the team.
• Track schedule risks and drive resolution with leadership and program management.
• Manage cross-team dependencies between software, hardware, systems engineering, and flight test.
• Coordinate lifecycle from design to release with software engineering leads, including reviews and release planning.
• Support flight test campaign planning by ensuring software Deliverables meet objectives.
• Maintain team organization around priorities, commitments, decisions, and follow-through.
