Qualifications

• Has passion for breastfeeding and supporting other mothers.
• WIC participant or willingness to participate in WIC programs.

Responsibilities

• Gives basic breastfeeding information and support to new mothers, including benefits and overcoming barriers.
• Maintains a caseload of WIC mothers and conducts routine contact.
• Attends breastfeeding training classes to become a peer counselor.
• Counsels WIC pregnant and breastfeeding mothers by telephone, home visits, and hospital visits.
• May counsel women in the WIC clinic and outside standard hours; travel to district clinics as needed.
• Keeps records of all contacts with WIC mothers and refers to appropriate specialists.
• Attends prenatal classes and breastfeeding support groups; participates in staff meetings.
• Promotes breastfeeding peer counseling through special projects as assigned.
