Job summary

Brown University Health is seeking a Phlebotomy Technician to obtain blood and specimens for routine and specialized tests on pediatric and adult patients. You will register patients, collect samples, and ensure proper labeling, documentation, and transport in a busy hospital setting.

Role emphasizes patient- and family-centered care, adherence to procedures, and collaboration with nursing and pathology teams across adult and pediatric units. Per diem hours available with varied shifts.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Phlebotomy certificate through NACLS or completion of a phlebotomy program with internship demonstrating 100 successful venipunctures.
• In lieu of internship, 6 months phlebotomy experience may be considered.
• In lieu of certification, 5+ years direct phlebotomy experience may be considered.

Responsibilities

• Perform functions to assure proper collection and documentation of patient specimens.
• Register patients and order tests following policies for patient identification and verification.
• Manage ABN including codes, signature, review, document management and scanning.
• Clerical tasks: follow-ups, filing, phones, report delivery, and admitting patients to treatment areas.
• Maintain standing orders and ensure tasks are completed.
• Provide patients with forms and prep instructions for tests or appointments.
• Schedule venipunctures or capillary punctures per test priority and requirements, using labels and the Pathology Handbook.
• Verify patient identity and prep prior to venipuncture; alert staff to deviations or adverse conditions.
• Label, wrap and transport samples; maintain procurement records.
• Follow infection control and universal precautions.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
