Job summary

County of Roanoke Virginia is seeking a Maintenance Technician to perform routine unskilled and semi-skilled labor and assist with repairs, maintenance, and upfits on county and related fleets. The role requires basic electrical work and adherence to safety guidelines, with work conducted under supervision in a shop environment.

The candidate should have a high school diploma or equivalent and a valid Virginia driver’s license.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in repair and maintenance of gasoline, diesel, hydraulic or cable-operated equipment.
  • Service equipment including fueling, oil checks, minor fabrication, and vehicle detailing for sale.
  • Perform 12-volt electrical repairs and install/replace lights and upfits.
  • Perform routine preventive maintenance and diagnose defects with testing equipment.
  • Perform minor repairs such as bulb and belt replacements.
  • Transport vehicles to repair sites as needed.
  • Operate shop tools and diagnostic equipment.
  • Road test and inspect work to ensure quality.
  • Enter work order information into fleet management software.
  • Maintain clean and orderly vehicle bays and parts areas.

Job description

Performs routine unskilled and semi-skilled manual labor under immediate and general supervision. Assists with mechanical repairs, maintenance work, 12-volt electrical work, vehicle upfits/in-services, welding/fabrication, and vehicle decommissions on vehicles for the County, Western Virginia Water Authority, and other smaller fleets. Work is performed in accordance with current laws, government regulations, and the County's Fleet Management Policy. Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Assists in the repair and maintenance of a variety of assets under the direction of division leadership and senior technicians, including gasoline, diesel, hydraulic, or cable-operated equipment.
  • Services equipment including fueling, oil and fluid level checks, minor fabrication work, and vehicle washing and detailing, including all aspects of preparing vehicles for sale.
  • Performs 12-volt electrical repairs and installs/replaces lights, alternators, starters, emergency lighting upfit, and lighting removal.
  • Performs routine preventive maintenance procedures on all asset classes, including troubleshooting defects identified in the preventive maintenance inspection that requires diagnostic testing equipment and engine tune-up.
  • Performs minor repairs such as replacing bulbs, head lamps, windshield wiper blades, side-view mirror heads, drive belt adjustments, and flat tire replacement or repairs.
  • Transports vehicles to and from customer and vendor repair sites as needed.
  • Operates tools necessary to perform duties including pneumatic tools, power tools, hand tools, and other diagnostic/testing equipment.
  • Road tests and inspects work performed to ensure services and repairs have been properly completed.
  • Enters asset work order information in fleet management software.
  • Maintains vehicle bays, general shop, and parts areas in a clean and orderly state.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Education:

Required: High school diploma or equivalent.

Experience:

Preferred: Minimum of 12 months experience in the maintenance and repair of motorized equipment and 12-volt electrical systems.

Certifications/Licenses:

Required: Valid Virginia driver's license with a good driving record.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

General knowledge of methods, tools and equipment used in the repair of engines, automobiles, trucks, and equipment including diagnostic/testing equipment. Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods and work in confined spaces in and around motorized equipment. Ability to work as part of a team. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions, safety labels or warnings. Skill in the use and operation of shop tools, air tools and machinery. Ability to understand and follow instructions relating to the safe usage of tools, chemicals, and other materials. Ability to organize and perform routine cleaning and maintenance functions independently without work-site supervision. Mechanical aptitude to learn diagnostic methods. Ability to maintain basic records of work. Ability to establish effective working relationships with staff, user departments, outside vendors, and service providers.

Additional Requirements:

Subject to a complete criminal history background search with acceptable results. May work flexible hours to accommodate shop customer requirements. Must own a set of basic automobile mechanic hand tools, to be used on the job. Expected to report to work for normal shift regardless of weather or emergency situations, unless directed otherwise by supervisor. Required to wear employer provided personal protective equipment, including safety shoes and eye protection. Following a conditional offer of employment, must pass a post offer DOT physical examination and DOT drug screening. Must be able to perform the job as described in the Physical and Environmental Demands section of this job description.
