FLEET SERVICE SUPERVISOR

Class Code: 20000730

Grade: S-24

Definition

Under general supervision, plans, coordinates, and directs a major section of the repair and maintenance fleet program and is engaged in facility operations and maintenance; assures vehicles and equipment are repaired and maintained in conformance with industry, state, and County regulations and standards; and performs related work as required.

Distinguishing Characteristics

This is the first-line supervisory level for Fleet Technician series.

Illustrative Duties
  • Plans, schedules, and supervises fleet technicians engaged in skilled transmission, electrical, and engine work and repairing and maintaining combustion, hybrid, and electric engines.
  • Utilizes a computerized maintenance management system to schedule work, monitor employee productivity, order parts, maintain records, and prepare reports.
  • Analyzes and assesses the cause of equipment failures and takes corrective action.
  • Reviews work orders and commercial invoices for accuracy and completeness.
  • Coordinates maintenance activities with other departments.
  • Remains current on safety regulations and procedures and instructs subordinates on correct safety practices to prevent workplace accidents.
  • Assists with troubleshooting complex engine and transmission problems.
  • Investigates, documents, and reports accidents, injuries, and safety issues.
  • Prepares high dollar repair estimates for Fleet Service Administrator’s review.
  • Performs performance evaluations, coaching, employee discipline, counseling, and training.
  • Ensures all equipment, tools, and machinery are properly operated and maintained, and contacts contractors for repairs when necessary.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Thorough knowledge of the tools, equipment and methods used in the mechanical repair of a wide variety of automotive, construction and industrial equipment.
  • Skill in performing difficult mechanical repairs.
  • Ability to plan, organize and supervise a work program of equipment maintenance and repair.
  • Ability to establish and maintain a parts inventory system.
  • Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to read and comprehend relevant documents.
Employment Standards, Licenses, and Certifications

Education and Experience: High School diploma or G.E.D. issued by a state department of education; plus, five years of experience in problem diagnosis, repair and maintenance of a wide variety of light, medium, heavy and/or specialized automotive equipment; plus, one year of experience at a lead or supervisory level.

Certificates and Licenses Required
For the Department of Vehicle Services
  • Prior to completion of the probationary period, certain positions require a current Virginia Safety State Inspection Certificate and/or a Virginia Emission Inspection License.
  • Must hold a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Class B with air brakes, P (Passenger) and S (School Bus) endorsements.
  • May be required to provide copies of driving record periodically for verification of driving status.
  • Fairfax County requires CDL holders to obtain and keep current a Department of Transportation (DOT) Medical Card.
For All Other Departments
  • Some positions within this classification may require a valid commercial driver's license (CDL). CDL class and endorsement(s) are determined by the needs of the business area.
Bonus Eligibility

Positions within this classification that require a CDL that are general merit may be eligible for a one-time hiring incentive bonus for new county employees only. This bonus program requires a signed payback agreement between the department and employee. Must have CDL at time of hire.
