Job summary

Roanoke County is seeking a general fleet maintenance technician to support the repair and servicing of a variety of assets. The role involves basic mechanical work, 12-volt electrical tasks, and routine preventive maintenance in the county shop.

Responsibilities include assisting senior technicians, performing minor repairs, and preparing vehicles for sale. A Virginia driver’s license is required, with a background check and DOT screenings as applicable.

Qualifications

• Education: High school diploma or equivalent is required.
• Experience: Preferred minimum of 12 months in maintenance and repair of motorized equipment and 12-volt electrical systems.
• Certifications/Licenses: Valid Virginia driver’s license with a good driving record.
• Knowledge, Skills And Abilities: General knowledge of repair methods and ability to work as part of a team.
• Additional Requirements: Subject to criminal history background search; may require DOT physical and drug screening; must own basic mechanic hand tools.

Responsibilities

• Assists in the repair and maintenance of assets under supervision, including gasoline, diesel, hydraulic, or cable-operated equipment.
• Services equipment with fueling, oil checks, minor fabrication, and vehicle washing/detailed prep for sale.
• Performs 12-volt electrical repairs and installs/replaces lights, alternators, starters, and upfit lighting.
• Performs routine preventive maintenance and diagnostic testing; tunes engines as needed.
• Performs minor repairs such as bulb and wiper blade replacements, belt adjustments, and tire work.
• Transports vehicles to/from repair sites as needed.
• Operates tools including pneumatic, power, hand tools and diagnostic equipment.
• Road tests and inspects work to ensure proper completion; enters work order data in fleet management software.
• Maintains vehicle bays, general shop and parts areas in a clean, orderly state.
