The Fleet Operations Manager
Responsible for leadership, management, and supervision of bus shop employees, including floor supervisors, mechanics, automotive service assistants, parts and service coordinator and parts and service clerks. Resolves employee performance issues and manages all aspects of the maintenance, repair, and servicing of the school division and the local government motor vehicle fleets. Serves as a member of the Transportation Key Leaders Team, assists in developing goals, policies, and procedures for the Department. Responds to school bus accidents and is on call 24 hours, 7 days a week if needed to address emergencies.
Thorough and comprehensive knowledge of: the principles and practices of fleet vehicle and equipment repair shop management; the characteristics and maintenance needs of a wide variety of automotive and mechanical equipment; the hazards and safety precautions of large scale shop operations; the principles of operations of gasoline and diesel engines, power trains, hydraulic and air brake systems, diagnostic skills in fault analysis; computer skills in data entry and evaluation of maintenance histories of vehicles and equipment. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with the public and subordinates; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with public and subordinates. Ability to plan, organize and direct the work of others. Knowledge of pupil transportation regulations desired. English language proficiency is required per Code of Virginia 46.2-341.14.
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school or vocational school, and a minimum of three years of experience in the maintenance and repair of automotive fleets is required. Two years of supervisory and administrative experience is required. Graduation from an accredited two or four year college or university with an Associates or Bachelor Degree preferred. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Satisfactory health condition is a requirement as certified by competent medical authority. Must demonstrate the ability to successfully complete the Virginia Education Department training curriculum for school bus drivers and obtain a Commercial Driver's License with appropriate school bus endorsements within the probationary period. Possession of or ability to obtain Virginia State Inspections License within six months. Familiarity with commonly used automated office equipment is required.
Work typically performed between an office setting and an open bay bus maintenance facility. Frequent bending, stooping, and crawling to inspect on and under vehicles is necessary. Occasional travel throughout all County roads during days and evenings in inclement weather is required. Frequent contact with the Director/Deputy Director and bus shop employees is necessary. Regular contact with local government officials to coordinate a maintenance plan is necessary. Frequent personal contact with vendors and general public is required.
