SALARY RANGE: $43,108 to $90,671

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

Responsible for the maintenance and repair of school buses and motor pool vehicles to ensure that all buses and vehicles are safe and dependable.

ESSENTIAL TASKS:

  • Responsible for the overall repair, maintenance, safety, and dependability of BCPS buses and other vehicles.
  • Recommend the type of repair to be performed and help determine the need and feasibility of major repairs.
  • Maintain the BCPS vehicle fleet and make recommendations regarding the purchase, acquisition, replacement, and disposal of vehicles.
  • Maintain a spare bus fleet to provide replacement vehicles when buses are out of service for repairs.
  • Assist with BCPS vehicle and driver assignments, including scheduling substitute coverage as needed.
  • Communicate with transportation and school staff after hours to maintain coverage of all bus routes.
  • Work with BCPS Transportation staff to monitor road conditions during inclement weather and assist with transportation-related decisions.
  • Coordinate parking lot clearing and return-to-school process with BCPS Operations staff.
  • Repair and maintain shop equipment and recommend additions and improvements to the transportation facility and compound.
  • Ensure that all BCPS vehicles comply with applicable Virginia Department of Education, Department of Pupil Transportation, and State Police standards and requirements.
  • Complete State Inspection stickers and oversee the inventory of stickers and related supplies required by the State Police.
  • Analyze parts, equipment, and supply needs and recommend the purchase of new equipment and the replacement or disposal of old and obsolete equipment.
  • Train employees on new procedures, equipment, and maintenance practices.
  • Interpret repair manuals, parts manuals, work orders, and other technical information necessary to complete maintenance activities.
  • Respond to accidents involving BCPS vehicles. File and coordinate vehicle insurance claims as needed.
  • Provide professional and technical information to the Operations Department as needed.
  • Communicate with bus drivers, vendors, citizens, and other stakeholders regarding vehicle maintenance and transportation-related concerns.
  • Perform related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Extensive knowledge of the methods, tools and equipment used in the repair of buses,

automotive passenger cars, trucks, construction and maintenance equipment; thorough

knowledge of and skill in the use and operation of shop tools and machinery; ability to detect

by inspection any worn or broken automotive parts; ability to adapt available tools and repair

parts to specific repair problems; ability to interpret and work from sketches, diagrams and

installation and repair charts; ability to follow oral and written instructions accurately; ability

to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

High school graduate or GED.

Valid Virginia State Police issued State Inspectors License.

Considerable experience with gas and diesel engines and systems and repair procedures.

A comparable amount of training and experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Significant standing, walking, moving, climbing, carrying, bending, kneeling, crawling,

reaching, handling, pushing, and pulling. Ability to lift articles up to 50 lbs.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Possession of a valid Virginia Commercial Driver’s License within 90 days.
  • Completion of all requirements of the bus driver training program offered by the school system.
  • Will drive a bus route when needed
  • Pass a yearly physical examination as required by the Code of Virginia and regulations of the Board of Education.
