Job summary

City of Saint Paul seeks a skilled Mechanic Welder to keep our fleet operating at its best. You will weld, fabricate, and repair a wide range of equipment from light trucks to heavy machinery, performing diagnostics on mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems.

The role emphasizes hands-on problem solving, documentation in fleet systems, and potential ASE or welding certifications. A four-day, 10-hour night schedule with a 6.5% shift premium after 6 PM is offered.

Qualifications

• Two-year automotive, heavy truck, and/or heavy equipment repair program plus 3 years (1,500 hours per year minimum) experience maintaining and repairing mechanical systems, automobiles/light duty vehicles, or heavy trucks and/or equipment. Experience must include welding and fabrication work.
• Apprenticeship program plus 3 years (1,500 hours per year minimum) experience maintaining and repairing mechanical systems, automobiles/light duty vehicles, or heavy trucks and/or equipment. Experience must include welding and fabrication work.
• Small engine or turf and grounds equipment vocational program plus 3 years (1,500 hours per year minimum) experience maintaining and repairing related equipment with welding and fabrication.
• Welding or metal fabrication vocational program plus 3 years (1,500 hours per year minimum) experience performing welding and fabrication on vehicles/equipment, including acetylene, MIG, TIG, stick, or arc-welding equipment.
• Six years (1,500 hours per year minimum) of increasingly responsible experience performing maintenance and repairs on various equipment classes, including welding and fabrication.

Responsibilities

• Perform welding, plasma cutting, fabrication, and machining operations to repair, modify, and fabricate metal components and structures.
• Dismantle, repair, or replace broken or worn parts on equipment utilizing acetylene and arc-welding equipment.
• Perform skilled repairs and diagnostics on mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems.
• Service and maintain a wide variety of vehicles and equipment including mowers, light duty trucks, snowplows, street sweepers, and heavy equipment.
• Document all repairs, parts usage, welding, and labor activity in electronic fleet management systems.
• ASE Certification and/or welding certification is highly valued.
