Job summary

The City of Saint Paul seeks a Vehicle Technician to inspect, diagnose, maintain and repair heavy‑duty trucks, construction equipment, and municipal gear. You will work with advanced diagnostic technology and skilled mechanical expertise to keep the fleet operating safely and efficiently.

Requirements include two‑year repair programs or equivalent, multiple pathways for skilled experience, and an emphasis on safety. Night shifts offer a +6.5% premium; CDL considerations apply by unit.

Qualifications

• Formal training in heavy truck and/or equipment repair through a two-year program or equivalent apprenticeship.
• Experience repairing heavy trucks and/or equipment with progressive responsibility.
• Background in mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic and diagnostic systems.
• Valid Minnesota Class D driver’s license; CDL requirements may apply for certain units.
• ASE certification is highly valued and encouraged.

Responsibilities

• Troubleshoot, maintain, and perform skilled repairs and diagnostics on complex systems using advanced equipment.
• Service and maintain heavy trucks, construction equipment, and related municipal gear.
• Document inspections, maintenance, repairs, and parts usage in fleet systems.
• Adhere to safety and DOT/ CDL-related requirements as applicable.
• Support multiple divisions as needed with repair and maintenance tasks.
