Job summary

A landscaping service provider in Hawthorn Woods, Illinois, is seeking a skilled Fleet Mechanic to perform repair and maintenance on trucks, trailers, and other motor vehicles. Qualifications

Job Summary

The Fleet Mechanic will perform repair work and maintenance for trucks, trailers, semi-tractors, and other motor vehicles & other equipment.

Supervisory Responsibilities
  • None.
Duties/Responsibilities
  • Identifies mechanical problems, either visually or with computer diagnostic equipment.
  • Performs tests on specific parts and systems to confirm proper mechanical function; ensures that all critical parts are examined.
  • Repair automobiles, trucks, landscape equipment, and other motorized vehicles, including snow machinery.
  • Performs routine and preventive maintenance, including oil changes and tune-ups.
  • Repairs or replaces malfunctioning parts and systems, such as brake pads, belts, water pumps, transmissions, and other mechanical parts.
  • Specializes in vehicle transmission systems.
  • Perform routine vehicle maintenance.
  • Performs further tests, which may include test driving the vehicle, to ensure repairs are completed correctly.
  • Diesel experience.
  • Experience in the use of diagnostic tools to test vehicle components is a plus.
  • Welding & fabrication skills are a plus.
  • Use diagnostic tools to test vehicle components.
  • Perform quality inspections before returning the vehicle to operations.
  • Build and assemble machines or mechanical components according to requirements.
  • Inspect machines, engines, transmissions, etc., and run diagnostic tests to discover functionality issues.
  • Conduct repairs aiming for maximum reliability.
  • Troubleshoot reported problems and resolve them in a timely manner.
  • Perform thorough maintenance on machinery, equipment, and systems.
  • Clean and apply lubricants to machinery components.
  • Replenish fluids and parts of engines and machinery.
  • Provide consultation on correct maintenance and preventative measures to machine or vehicle users.
  • Undertake other duties as assigned (e.g., repair of hydraulic systems, painting vehicles, etc.).
  • Keep logs of work and report on issues.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Requirements
  • Extensive knowledge of all aspects of vehicle repair.
  • Excellent mechanical repair skills.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to visually diagnose mechanical issues.
  • Proficient with computer diagnostic equipment and software.
  • Ability to read service and repair manuals.
  • Ability to perform repairs in a timely fashion.
  • Ability to read work orders.
Education and Experience
  • Minimum of four (4) years of experience diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining fleet equipment.
  • A valid driver’s license and the ability to pass a background check and drug test.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Master technician certification from the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence is a plus.
Physical Requirements
  • Must be able to work safely in a noisy area with many odors present.
  • Ability to regularly lift 50 pounds and occasionally lift up to 100 pounds.
  • Must be able to inspect vehicles to determine repairs needed.
  • Good vision to inspect repair work.
  • Must be able to bend, stretch, kneel, and squat to perform repairs and inspections.
