Watco is seeking a Fleet Manager to oversee railcar fleet management, maintenance, and operational efficiency. You will coordinate activities to ensure regulatory compliance and safety while optimizing performance and costs across our rail assets.

The role emphasizes monitoring performance, scheduling maintenance, and reporting to leadership. Strong collaboration with operations and compliance teams is essential to drive improvements within a fast-paced transport network.

Qualifications

  • Excellent communication and coordination skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with various departments and external partners.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Excel, PowerBI).
  • Railroad experience is preferred.
  • Knowledge of railroad car types and basic ownership regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor fleet performance and utilization.
  • Calculate KPIs and reporting metrics for fleet efficiency.
  • Prepare and interpret fleet reports for leadership.
  • Coordinate maintenance schedules and ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Track costs and manage fleet resources using tracking software.
  • Maintain safety standards and regulatory compliance for the fleet.
  • Support senior management with fleet status and improvement recommendations.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Job Summary

The Fleet Manager is responsible for overseeing the management, maintenance, and operational efficiency of a company's railcar fleet. The job typically involves coordinating all activities related to the fleet, ensuring regulatory compliance, and maintaining the safety and reliability of the rail assets.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities
  • Monitor fleet performance, utilization, and productivity
  • Calculate and interpret key performance indicators and metrics like dwell, transit cycles (L/E)
  • Prepare “Ratio Report” to evaluate fleet performance
  • Utilize systems like RailPulse and Telegraph for tracking and managing fleet resources.
  • Ensure proper maintenance schedules are followed for all equipment, utilizing reports for repair costs per car
  • Oversee regular inspections, repairs, and service to minimize downtime and ensure compliance with safety and regulatory standards (schedule maintenance program?)
  • Ensure the fleet adheres to federal, state, and local regulations, including safety standards set by organizations like the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA). (Scrap programs and FRA overage waivers)
  • Track and report fleet performance, maintenance schedules, and operational costs
  • Use software tools for fleet management, performance analysis, and maintenance records
  • Prepare reports for senior management regarding fleet status, performance, and recommendations for improvements
  • Other duties may be assigned, as required

  • Railroad experience
  • Railroad car type general knowledge (specifications, commodities, etc.)

Education

Must be 18 years of age or older with High School or GED equivalent
