Summary
SUMMARY OF POSITION:
The Maintenance Manager plans, organizes, and supervises the Division's maintenance staff and functions. This management position is responsible for overall fleet/equipment support and related maintenance processes, including inspection, repair, pre/post servicing, vehicle distribution, quality assurance, and disposal at the Division level. The manager will collaborate with the Regional Maintenance Manager and Operations teams to ensure fleet condition, equipment reliability, safety, and cost-effective performance.
Responsibilities
- Manage departmental hiring, training, coaching, performance management, discipline, scheduling, and overtime approval.
- Maintain an ongoing preventive and corrective maintenance program to ensure service excellence.
- Review reports on road calls, breakdowns, parts inventory, repairs, and safety performance.
- Provide hands-on maintenance assistance as needed.
- Educate drivers on responsibilities related to DVIRs, fleet operation, and CDL requirements.
- Ensure maintenance data is accurately entered into the vehicle maintenance system.
- Monitor inventory control, set performance goals, and report on Dossier efficiencies.
- Assist in purchasing new vehicles, equipment, tools, and containers.
- Establish maintenance training sessions to improve fleet condition and operational knowledge.
- Oversee compliance with federal and state programs, EPA, DOT, OSHA, and other regulations.
- Verify implementation of safety and environmental regulations and coordinate with safety teams.
- Ensure efficient vehicle utilization, maintenance quality, and transportation readiness.
- Report on fleet inventory and condition, including out-of-service listings.
- Manage divisional maintenance budgets.
- Implement and monitor all fleet maintenance activities, including pre/post trip inspections, warranty recovery, tire standards, and major repairs.
- Coordinate equipment movement between divisions, ensuring proper inspections and readiness.
- Evaluate body damage estimates and manage cost controls and vendor relations.
- Analyze service issues, perform root cause analysis, and recommend solutions.
- Support purchasing efforts and develop performance metrics and diagnostic tools for fleet quality monitoring.
Work Environment
Key environmental/work demands include:
- Use of motor coordination and finger dexterity for tasks such as keyboarding, machine operation, and driving.
- Occasional physical effort involving lifting/moving objects up to 20 pounds, stooping, reaching, and pushing.
- Exposure to occupational risks like cuts, bruises, machinery, and heavy equipment.
- Exposure to dirt, odors, noise, weather extremes, or similar elements.
- The work setting includes office, field, and maintenance facilities.
Certifications and Licenses
- Must have a valid Driver's License.
- CDL license preferred.
- Engine rebuild certification is a plus.
- Brake certification required.
Qualifications
- High School diploma required.
- 15+ years of progressive hands-on experience in fleet management, preferably in Waste Services, Transportation, Maintenance, or Parts administration.
- Strong project management, resource planning, and communication skills.
- Understanding of maintenance procedures and industry regulations (EPA, DOT, OSHA).
- Ability to manage complex situations with strategic and tactical focus.
- Autonomous yet team-oriented, capable of cross-functional collaboration.
- Experience in planning and implementing cost-effective resource management.
- Basic accounting knowledge.
- Attention to detail and consistent work quality.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and maintenance software (e.g., Dossier).
- Strong analytical skills and experience with data management and reporting.
- Experience managing or working within cross-functional teams.
- Ability to manage operational and administrative processes in a high-growth environment.
- A proven record of professional, personal, and academic success.
