Job description

Summerset Marine Construction has been providing a full range of lakefront services to its customers in Southeastern Wisconsin since 1990. As the largest pier and lift dealer in Wisconsin, Summerset has grown over the years along with its customers’ needs, able to provide the expertise and products necessary for the perfect waterfront solution. Servicing hundreds of clients from Madison to Milwaukee, Summerset Marine provides the highest level of expertise to design, install and support any pier and boat lift system, always on call for any service needs.

About the role

The Fleet Manager oversees the maintenance department and truck fleet. The Fleet Manager will ensure that all equipment, machinery, barges, and facilities are in optimal working condition to support efficient and safe project execution. This position requires strong leadership, technical expertise, adaptability to pivot quickly on projects, and a proactive approach to new challenges.

What you'll do

  • Supervise a team of maintenance technicians and ensure they are adequately trained and equipped to perform their duties.
  • Develop and implement preventive maintenance programs for equipment, barges, machinery, and facilities to minimize downtime and ensure reliability.
  • Conduct regular inspections of all equipment, including barges and watercraft, to identify maintenance needs and address them promptly.
  • Coordinate with project managers and field staff to schedule maintenance activities to minimize disruption and adapt to shifting project priorities.
  • Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, work orders, inspection reports, and maintenance history across the fleet and marine assets.
  • Monitor inventory of spare parts and consumables to ensure availability for both land and marine operations.
  • Troubleshoot equipment and machinery issues, including marine-specific systems, and coordinate repairs with internal or external providers.
  • Ensure compliance with DOT, FMCSA, and marine-specific regulations.
  • Stay flexible to pivot between priorities when operational needs change.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvement and cost savings; accept and embrace new operational challenges with a positive, solution-driven mindset.
  • Provide regular reporting on KPIs such as fleet uptime, maintenance costs, safety incidents, and responsiveness to unexpected project needs.
  • Oversee vehicle registration, maintenance scheduling, and safety inspections.
  • Manage fleet and marine budgets efficiently.
  • Implement and monitor tracking systems for land vehicles, trailers, and barges.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent; technical training or certification preferred.
  • Experience managing heavy equipment and marine vessels (barges, dredges, cranes).
  • Leadership and interpersonal skills; ability to direct a team and collaborate with project managers.
  • Ability to read schematics and technical manuals.
  • Knowledge of safety regulations for both DOT/FMCSA and marine construction standards.
  • Diesel engine knowledge is a plus.
  • Experience with CMMS systems is a plus.
  • Ability to adapt and pivot rapidly based on project changes.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours and travel.

Working Conditions and Physical Efforts:

  • Work involves walking, talking, hearing, lifting, pushing, pulling and/or carrying up to 100 pounds occasionally in addition to using material handling equipment.
  • May be required to stoop, bend, kneel, crouch or crawl. Vision abilities require close vision assessments. Moderately loud noise levels in the work environment.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 100 pounds as needed.
  • Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) as required.
  • Steel-toe boots are required.

Travel Requirements: Travel to job sites, may include overnights.
