Qualifications

Job description

Surus, a division of Concordia Wireless, is hiringa Fleet Manager to oversee the day-to-day management, safety, compliance, maintenance, and utilization of an approximately 80-unit fleet supporting telecommunications construction and field operations.

Role is based out of Carol Stream with flexible start time (6 am, 7 am)

The Fleet Manager will be responsible for ensuring that all company vehicles and equipment are safe, reliable, properly maintained, and compliant with DOT, FMCSA, OSHA, and applicable state and federal regulations. This position will work closely with operations, field supervisors, safety personnel, mechanics, and project management to ensure fleet availability and minimize downtime.

The ideal candidate has hands-on experience managing a commercial fleet in the telecommunications, utility, construction, or general contracting industry, as well as demonstrated experience preparing for and managing DOT transportation audits.

Pay Range: $95,000.00 - $105,000.00 a year plus annual bonus

Key Responsibilities
Fleet Operations
  • Manage an approximately 80-unit fleet consisting of Diesel trucks, Service trucks, Box trucks, Crew trucks, Pickup trucks, Directional drill support vehicles, Trailers, Generators, Light construction equipment
  • Maintain accurate fleet records, registrations, titles, inspections, maintenance records, and vehicle assignments.
  • Monitor vehicle utilization, mileage, fuel consumption, maintenance costs, and overall fleet performance.
  • Coordinate vehicle assignments and availability with operations and field management.
  • Develop processes to maximize fleet utilization while controlling operating costs.
  • Manage vehicle acquisition, replacement, disposal, and lease/rental activities as needed.
DOT & Regulatory Compliance
  • Maintain compliance with FMCSA, DOT, state DOT, and applicable federal and state transportation regulations.
  • Maintain driver qualification files, MVRs, medical certifications, vehicle inspection records, and other required documentation.
  • Monitor compliance with applicable Hours of Service (HOS), DVIR, drug/alcohol testing, and driver qualification requirements.
  • Administer and monitor DOT-required inspection, maintenance, and recordkeeping programs.
  • Prepare the company for DOT/FMCSA audits and investigations.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact during transportation audits and coordinate responses to auditor requests.
  • Identify compliance deficiencies and implement corrective actions.
  • Maintain organized documentation and audit-ready records.
  • Stay current on changes to DOT/FMCSA regulations and communicate requirements to management and drivers.
Vehicle Maintenance & Safety
  • Establish and manage preventive maintenance schedules for the fleet.
  • Coordinate repairs with internal mechanics, dealerships, vendors, and outside repair facilities.
  • Track vehicle downtime and ensure repairs are completed efficiently.
  • Inspect vehicles and investigate recurring mechanical or safety issues.
  • Establish standards for vehicle cleanliness, condition, and safe operation.
  • Work with the Safety Department to investigate vehicle incidents and implement corrective actions
  • Help develop and enforce company fleet safety policies.
Driver & Employee Management
  • Support driver onboarding and ensure required qualifications and documentation are completed before drivers operate company vehicles.
  • Monitor driver performance, MVRs, violations, accidents, and compliance issues.
  • Coordinate driver training, safety meetings, and required certifications.
  • Work with supervisors to address unsafe driving behavior or recurring vehicle-related issues.
  • Promote a strong culture of fleet safety and regulatory compliance.
Financial & Vendor Management
  • Monitor fleet maintenance, fuel, repair, rental, and operating expenses.
  • Review invoices and negotiate pricing with vendors and service providers.
  • Develop relationships with dealerships, repair facilities, fuel providers, rental companies, and fleet-management vendors.
  • Identify opportunities to reduce fleet operating costs without compromising safety or reliability.
  • Prepare fleet reports and metrics for senior management.
Qualifications
  • 5+ years of fleet management experience, preferably in telecommunications, utility, construction, transportation, or a related industry.
  • Experience managing a fleet of 50+ vehicles/units strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated DOT/FMCSA compliance and transportation audit experience; DOT/FMCSA compliance training preferred
  • Working knowledge of FMCSA regulations and commercial motor vehicle requirements.
  • Strong understanding of preventive maintenance and fleet lifecycle management.
  • Experience managing outside vendors and repair facilities.
  • Strong organizational and recordkeeping skills.
  • Ability to analyze fleet costs, utilization, maintenance, and compliance data.
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office/Excel and fleet management software.
  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
