Job description

Under general supervision, this position performs mid-to-journey level skilled mechanical and electrical work in maintaining, repairing, and overhauling motorized heavy equipment, trucks, and automobiles. This role involves more complex tasks, greater independence, and requires sound judgment and initiative compared to a Fleet Maintenance Technician I.

  1. Performs repairs on Light Duty (Class 1-2), Medium Duty (Class 3-6), and Heavy Duty (Class 7-8) vehicles, with supervision as needed.
  2. Conducts computerized and physical diagnostics and repairs on engine, driveline, lighting, and hydraulic systems of automotive, trucks, and heavy equipment.
  3. Repairs various heavy and specialized equipment.
  4. Rebuilds hydraulic components, alternators, generators, compressors, and carburetors.
  5. Follows specifications in service manuals for repairs.
  6. Repairs brakes on automobiles, trucks, and some heavy equipment.
  7. Performs daily data entry related to work and repair orders.
  8. Performs basic design, modification, and fabrication to maintain equipment operability.
  9. Maintains shop tools and equipment at a high standard.
  10. Acts as lead worker, providing training and oversight to other maintenance staff and offering technical guidance.
  11. Performs bodywork, painting, window and door realignment, and collision estimates.
  12. Performs additional mechanical repair tasks, responds to radio calls, and oversees emergency crews during weather events or major breakdowns, as directed.
  13. Performs other duties as assigned.

  1. High School Diploma or GED.
  2. Completion of one year of postsecondary training or four certifications in Heavy-duty truck repair from the State of Michigan.
  3. At least one year of responsible vehicle and equipment maintenance experience or three years external experience.
  4. One year of welding experience using various techniques and equipment.
  5. Valid Michigan CDL, Group A, with airbrakes.
  6. Ability to read schematics and manuals, using books, computers, and the internet.
  7. Ability to follow safety regulations and work efficiently.
  8. Own tools required.
  9. Proficiency with relevant computer systems, software, and business equipment.

This role involves frequent exertion, including lifting up to 100 pounds, and requires physical activities such as handling, stooping, kneeling, reaching, and repetitive motions. It requires good vision, hearing, and the ability to operate machinery and observe surroundings. The work environment includes exposure to mechanical parts, chemicals, electrical hazards, vibrations, weather conditions, and noise. Shift work, overtime, and emergency response outside normal hours are required.
