Job summary

The City of Mill Valley seeks a skilled Fleet Maintenance Mechanic II to keep its diverse fleet safe and reliable. This hands-on role performs diagnostics, repairs, overhauls, and outfitting on gasoline, diesel, hydraulic, and electronically controlled systems.

Based at the Corporation Yard, you will service automobiles, police vehicles, trucks, and heavy equipment, working under general supervision with opportunities to mentor others and improve equipment readiness for city operations.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

ABOUT THE POSITION

Fleet Maintenance Mechanic II performs a wide variety of mechanical repairs, maintenance, and outfitting of fleet vehicles and equipment, including but not limited to gasoline, diesel, and other power and mechanical driven equipment; and to perform related work as required. This position is primarily assigned to the Corporation Yard but may occasionally be assigned to equipment stationed at other locations.

Fleet Maintenance Mechanic II is the mid- to journey-level class in the fleet maintenance mechanic series. Positions assigned to this classification work under general supervision performing the full range of fleet maintenance tasks. Work in this classification is distinguished from that of Fleet Maintenance Mechanic I by the greater complexity of assignments received, the greater independence with which an incumbent is expected to operate, and the exercise of judgment and initiative in the performance of daily duties.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Tests, inspects, diagnoses, and troubleshoots mechanical, electrical, electronic, and hydraulic problems or defects in fleet vehicles and equipment to assess their condition and determine maintenance and repair needs.
• Tunes, repairs, and overhauls gasoline and diesel engines, standard and automatic transmissions, clutch and brake systems, and other major automobile & heavy equipment components.
• Fabricates special parts and outfits new equipment, such as police vehicles, for City service.
• Adjusts, repairs, replaces, and/or rebuilds carburetors, fuel injection systems, and other fuel system components.
• Installs, troubleshoots, adjusts, replaces, repairs, and rewires electrical components (e.g. ignition, signals, lights, and electrical controls), including computer-controlled components.
• Repairs and rebuilds hydraulic and pneumatic apparatus such as backhoes, loaders, booms, and lifts.
• Adjusts, disassembles, and repairs or rebuilds drum and disc braking systems, valves, master cylinders, and pneumatic or other hydraulic controls.
• Repairs and replaces suspension and steering components.
• Adjusts, repairs, maintains, or overhauls automatic and manual transmissions, differentials, power take off drives, clutches, and related drive train components.
• Uses welding and cutting equipment to make repairs or modify equipment.
• Assists other mechanics or oversees others on jobs requiring more than one person.
• Orders materials and supplies required for maintenance and repair work.
• Keeps records of work performed, time and materials (including cost of materials) used by work request.
• Maintains and inspects for the safety of others, the shop, equipment, and surroundings.
• Repairs and rebuilds belt driven apparatus such as mowers, blowers, and sweepers.
• Performs on‑site field repairs to stationary or disabled equipment.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

• HS diploma or equivalent
• Three (3) to five (5) years of experience performing fleet maintenance repair

THE SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE

Knowledge of:

• Methods, materials, equipment, and tools used in the maintenance and repair of fleet vehicles and equipment.
• Fleet-related light and heavy-duty power-driven equipment, electrical systems, and computer control systems.
• Hybrid technology.

• Basic understanding of best practices, especially those relating to safety and risk management.
