  • Design and fabricate custom parts and tools for service trucks.
  • Respond to after-hours emergencies and possible overtime.
  • Maintain maintenance records and prepare short-range work schedules.
  • Provide technical assistance and training to operators and staff.

Job description

Position Summary

Perform duties to protect the City's fleet through effective maintenance and repair of City-owned vehicles and equipment. Responsibilities include scheduling, diagnosing, maintaining, repairing, and modifying the City's fleet of vehicles, engines, and equipment. These tasks are illustrative only and may include other related duties.

Full-Time 40 hours per week

Monday-Friday 7:00am-3:30pm

AFSCME-represented positions

12-month probationary period

Essential Duties
  • Diagnoses, maintains, repairs, and/or modifies a diverse range of vehicles, engines, and light, medium and heavy equipment. Performs condition and risk assessments; communicates findings to appropriate staff.
  • Troubleshoots and retrieves codes to determine repairs using Genisys OTC or equivalent diagnostic tools.
  • Estimates job costs and resource requirements for vehicle or equipment maintenance and repairs. Prepares material specifications and cost estimates. Requests quotes and orders parts and outside repairs for City vehicles. Purchases materials and services in alignment with City procurement process. Maintains inventory.Works with vendors to achieve successful outside repairs.
  • Schedules services and repairs using the computerized preventative maintenance program, on-line customer repair request form and garage operations electronic calendar.
  • Uses the internet to order parts and the computerized preventative maintenance program to update inventory, update part costs, set up vehicles, and correct vehicle mileage.
  • Designs and fabricates custom parts and tools. Customizes and assembles various appurtenances for service trucks and equipment.
  • Responds to emergency calls for road repair and service, including after hours response within required timeframe. Position may involve working overtime and on weekends as needed.
  • Assists in the development and implementation of preventative, corrective, and major maintenance programs and maintenance schedules. Maintains service and repair records and reports.
  • Prepares and/or assists in preparation of short range work schedules.
  • Provides input regarding equipment design and service requirements. Assists in short and long range program planning.
  • Provides technical assistance to department personnel and other departments. Provides training and information to equipment operators in daily maintenance activities.
  • Assists with developing specifications for replacement of vehicles and equipment.
  • Maintains job-site safety for co-workers, customers and the general public including traffic control and minimization of hazardous conditions.
  • Performs as a member of a team, assisting with development of work group goals and objectives, and contributing to the achievement of goals and objectives.
  • Maintains knowledge base of maintenance and repair activities, safety practices, and trade skills applicable to a fleet maintenance facility. Shares information with co-workers.
  • Conforms with all safety rules and practices, and perform work is a safe manner.
  • Acts ethically and honestly; applies ethical standards of behavior to daily work activities and interactions. Builds confidence in the City through own actions.
  • Complies with all Administrative Policies. Performs work in accordance with Council Policies and Municipal Code sections applicable to the position.
  • Delivers excellent customer service to diverse audiences. Responds to customer service requests, questions and complaints. Maintains a positive customer service demeanor and deliver service in a respectful and patient manner.

Qualifications and Skills

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent and two years of formal education and/or vocational training in automotive, industrial or heavy equipment technology.
  • Five years job related work experience in automotive, construction equipment and/or heavy equipment repair, including experience in a fleet environment.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of metals and welding practices; skilled in gas, arc, mig and tig welding in repair and specialty fabrication work.
  • Ability to read and interpret schematic diagrams and parts breakout diagrams.
  • Ability to diagnose and retrieve codes to determine repairs using Genisys OTC or equivalent diagnostic tools.
  • Ability to apply procedural guidelines and program objectives to the planning and scheduling of work. Must have the ability to gather information, solve complex technical problems, and make cost effective technical and procedural decisions and recommendations.
  • Effective communication, analytical, customer service and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to use a computer to perform the essential functions of the position.
  • Ability to get along well with coworkers, and the public and maintain effective work relationships.
  • Thorough knowledge of traffic laws and defensive driving.

Special Requirements

  • This position requires the incumbent to provide hand and diagnostic tools necessary to perform the job effectively.
  • Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Master Technician certifications in Automobile/Light Truck and/or Medium-Heavy Truck are desirable.
  • Journey level skills with hand and power tools and diagnostic equipment.
  • First Aid and CPR certification, Oregon Department of Transportation Traffic Control, and Forklift Operation certification or the ability to obtain within one (1) year of appointment.
  • Possession of and ability to maintain a valid Oregon Driver's License. Ability to obtain and maintain a valid Oregon Class B Commercial Driver's License with no air brake restriction within the one year probationary period. Oregon Class A Commercial Driver's License with no air brake restriction is preferred. Tank and Passenger endorsements are preferred.
  • Must be able to respond within 60 minutes or less to the Public Works Administrative offices for after-hours calls or emergencies prior to the end of probationary period.
