Job summary

City of Gillette is seeking a Diesel Technician to repair and maintain city vehicles and equipment. Responsibilities include troubleshooting a range of heavy and light machinery, performing small engine work, hydraulic system maintenance, and completing billing work orders.

The role involves after-hours support and site inspections of underground fuel systems. The ideal candidate has an Associate in Diesel Technology with ASE certification and a valid Class B CDL or the ability to obtain one

Qualifications

  • Associates of Applied Science in Diesel Technology and active ASE Certification in Automotive Test Series or Medium/Heavy Truck Test Series.
  • Five years of verifiable experience with a high school diploma or GED, with ability to obtain an ASE Certification within six months.
  • Must possess or obtain within six months a Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) issued by the State.

Responsibilities

  • Troubleshoots, diagnoses, and repairs light, medium, and heavy-duty equipment and vehicles.
  • Performs small engine repairs.
  • Maintains and repairs hydraulic systems.
  • Completes work orders for billing.
  • Responds to after-hours and field breakdowns.
  • Maintains a clean and safe work area.
  • Maintains and repairs shop tools and equipment.
  • Performs inspections of underground fuel storage tanks and islands.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

The Fleet Supervisor assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.

GUIDELINES

Guidelines include manufacturer maintenance and repair manuals, work safety guidelines, and city and department policies and procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK
  • The work consists of related equipment maintenance and repair duties. The variety of equipment to be maintained contributes to the complexity of the work.
  • The purpose of this position is to repair and maintain city vehicles and equipment. Successful performance helps ensure the provision of safe and well-maintained vehicles for a variety of city operations.

  • Contacts are typically with co-workers, vendors, contractors, and other city employees.
  • Contacts are typically to exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • The work is typically performed while standing, walking, bending, crouching or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell.
  • The work is typically performed in a garage, stockroom, and outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee may be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, contagious or infectious diseases, or irritating chemicals. Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY

None.

Minimum Qualifications
  • An Associates of Applied Science in Diesel Technology AND (1) active individual ASE Certification test in either the Automotive Test Series or Medium/Heavy Truck Test Series. OR
  • Sufficient experience and education to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position usually associated with (5) years of verifiable experience AND possession of a high school diploma or GED; AND the ability to obtain (1) individual ASE Certification test either Automotive Test Series or Medium/Heavy Truck Test Series within the first six (6) months of employment.
  • Possession of or obtain within six (6) months of employment and maintain a Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) issued by the State of Wyoming.
