Job summary

The City of Gillette is seeking an Electric Lineman to assist in the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical infrastructure including overhead and underground distribution, substations, and transmission systems. You will operate bucket trucks and other equipment, climb poles, and follow stringent safety policies to ensure reliable service.

Minimum qualifications include a high school diploma or GED with lineman training or equivalent, and the ability to obtain a Wyoming Class A CDL

• Ability to obtain Wyoming Class A CDL within six months of hire.

Responsibilities

• Installs, maintains, and repairs overhead and underground electrical distribution infrastructure.
• Installs, maintains, and repairs substation system equipment.
• Installs, maintains, and repairs transmission system infrastructure.
• Performs duties in compliance with safety policies and procedures.
• Operate digger truck, bucket truck, wire puller, front-end loader, backhoe, and other equipment.
• Work from bucket trucks or climb poles to service electrical equipment on lines.
• Terminates underground wire to manufacturer specifications.
• Troubleshoots power lines and equipment.
• Knowledge of electric utility construction, maintenance, and repair methods.
• Complies with state and federal regulations and safety guidelines.

This position is responsible for assisting in the construction, repair, and maintenance of electrical infrastructure as authorized.

• Installs, maintains, and repairs overhead and underground electrical distribution infrastructure as authorized.
• Installs, maintains, and repairs electrical substation system equipment as authorized.
• Installs, maintains, and repairs transmission system infrastructure as authorized.
• Performs duties in compliance with all safety policies and procedures.
• Operate digger truck, bucket truck, wire puller, front-end loader, backhoe, and other equipment as authorized.
• Works from bucket trucks or climbing poles to construction and repair electrical equipment on lines.
• Employs proper safety equipment and techniques.
• Terminates underground wire to manufacturer specifications.
• Troubleshoots power lines and equipment.
• Locates electrical infrastructure.
• Performs related duties.
• Knowledge of the methods, practices, tools, materials, and equipment involved in the construction, maintenance, and repair of an electric utility system.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

The Electric Services Supervisor assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.

GUIDELINES

Guidelines include the National Electric Code, the National Electric Safety Code, OSHA guidelines, APPA safety guidelines, other electric codes and safety guidelines, and city and department policies and procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK

• The work consists of related technical duties. The variety of work assignments, dangerous field conditions, and inclement weather contribute to the complexity of the position.
• The purpose of this position is to assist in the installation, maintenance and repair of the electrical utility system as authorized. Successful performance helps ensure the efficient and effective delivery of electric services to customers.

• Contacts are typically with coworkers, vendors, consultants, contractors, electricians, representatives of other agencies, and the general public.
• Contacts are typically to exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT

• The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, bending, crouching, stooping, or walking. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high-degree dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell.
• The work is typically performed in an office, stockroom, warehouse, and outdoors. The employee may be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, and occasional cold or inclement weather. Some of the work is performed on utility poles, in elevated buckets, and in the presence of electrified lines. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.

Minimum Qualifications

• A high school diploma or GED AND completion of an electrical lineman training school or closely related experience OR any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities have been achieved.
• Ability to obtain a valid State of Wyoming Class A commercial driver's license within six months of hire.
• May be required to lift and/or carry heavy, bulky supplies, materials, and/or other items weighing up to 70 pounds.
• Must be able to work with hands rubber-gloved and with rubber sleeves.
• Must be able to work from an aerial lift device and climb and work on wood structures up to 100 feet in height.
• May be exposed to dangerous machinery, potential physical harm, extreme weather conditions, infectious diseases, high voltage work areas, and extreme heights.
• May be required to work outside the traditional work schedule.
• May be subject to call-out and/or call-back.
