Job summary

Prince William County Government seeks qualified Heavy Equipment Mechanics to keep county vehicles and equipment safe, reliable, and operational through preventive maintenance and timely repairs. You will diagnose and repair diesel- and gas-powered equipment, hydraulic drive units, grounds maintenance gear, and related systems using electronic scan tools and a range of shop equipment.

This full-time role offers a competitive hourly wage with benefits, retirement plans, paid leave, and holidays.

Qualifications

High school diploma or GED.
Two years of experience repairing or performing preventive maintenance on heavy equipment.
A valid Class B CDL, or the ability to obtain one within 12 months of hire.
ASE and/or relevant manufacturer certifications or ability to obtain.
Must supply your own mechanic hand tools; tool allowance provided twice a year.

Responsibilities

Inspect, diagnose, repair, and maintain heavy equipment, vehicles, and components.
Perform scheduled preventive maintenance on diesel-powered and gasoline-powered equipment.
Troubleshoot mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, pneumatic, and fuel system issues.
Repair or replace defective parts, components, and systems, including metal fabrication.
Conduct safety inspections and ensure equipment complies with regulations and standards.
Maintain accurate maintenance and repair records.
Operate diagnostic equipment and tools safely.
Respond to equipment breakdowns and perform emergency repairs.
Assist with keeping a clean and organized work area.
