A well-established and growing organization is seeking an experienced Fixed Asset Accountant to manage the accounting and recordkeeping associated with its capital assets and ongoing investment projects. This position will be responsible for maintaining accurate asset information, recording fixed asset activity, completing account reconciliations, and supporting monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close requirements.
The successful candidate will bring strong fixed asset accounting experience, a thorough understanding of general ledger procedures, and the ability to work closely with project leaders and other departments. This role requires a high level of accuracy, sound judgment, and the ability to independently prioritize multiple deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
Responsibilities
- Maintain complete and accurate accounting records for capital assets throughout the asset lifecycle.
- Record asset purchases, transfers, retirements, and other fixed asset activity in the organization’s financial system.
- Review active capital projects and coordinate with project stakeholders to determine when costs are ready to be placed into service.
- Monitor construction-in-progress and other capital accounts for items requiring capitalization, reclassification, or further review.
- Prepare recurring journal entries, account adjustments, and supporting schedules related to fixed assets.
- Reconcile assigned fixed asset and general ledger accounts each month.
- Research account differences, identify the underlying cause, and complete necessary corrections.
- Assist with financial close activities at the end of each month, quarter, and fiscal year.
- Conduct periodic physical reviews of company assets and compare findings with accounting records.
- Identify assets that have been relocated, retired, sold, abandoned, or otherwise removed from service.
- Ensure fixed asset documentation remains accurate, current, and properly supported.
- Work with internal teams to gather information regarding project status, asset usage, and capital expenditures.
- Apply established capitalization guidelines, accounting policies, and internal control requirements to all asset-related transactions.
- Provide schedules and supporting documentation for internal reviews, external audits, and financial reporting requests.
- Help strengthen fixed asset processes by identifying inconsistencies and recommending practical improvements.
- Maintain confidentiality when working with financial records, project costs, and other sensitive business information.
- Complete additional accounting projects and responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a closely related field.
- At least three years of direct fixed asset accounting experience.
- Strong knowledge of asset capitalization, additions, transfers, disposals, reconciliations, and general ledger accounting.
- Familiarity with financial close processes and the preparation of journal entries and account adjustments.
- Experience working with accounting software, financial applications, or enterprise resource planning systems.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including the ability to work effectively with spreadsheets and financial data.
- Understanding of generally accepted accounting principles and their application to fixed assets.
- Demonstrated ability to maintain accurate records and supporting documentation.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to resolve account discrepancies.
- Excellent attention to detail and a consistent commitment to accuracy.
- Ability to manage several assignments simultaneously while meeting established deadlines.
