Job Description

The Department of Economics seeks a detail-oriented and customer-focused Fiscal Technician to support the financial and administrative operations of a dynamic academic department.

This position plays a critical role in maintaining departmental finances, processing purchasing and reimbursement activities, supporting payroll administration, coordinating travel, managing records, and assisting with equipment inventory. The Fiscal Technician serves as a trusted resource for faculty, staff, students, and visitors while helping ensure compliance with university policies and procedures.
The successful candidate will thrive in a collaborative environment, possess strong organizational skills, and enjoy solving problems while supporting the mission of teaching, research, and service.

Required Qualifications
  • Experience providing fiscal, bookkeeping, accounting, or administrative support in a professional office environment.
  • Experience maintaining and reconciling financial records and transactions.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Excel and Word.
  • Demonstrated attention to detail, accuracy, and organizational skills.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Business Administration, Finance, or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience supporting fiscal operations in a higher education environment.
  • Knowledge of university fiscal, purchasing, payroll, travel, and records-management procedures.
  • Experience with accounts payable, accounts receivable, budget monitoring, or financial reporting.
  • Experience with Banner, HokieMart, Emburse Enterprise (Chrome River), TimeClock Plus, Labor Redistribution, P-Card reconciliation, or similar financial and administrative systems.
  • Familiarity with grants, sponsored research accounts, foundation accounts, or scholarship administration.
  • Experience maintaining equipment inventories, asset tracking, or surplus property activities.
  • Experience maintaining records in accordance with records-retention requirements.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills and experience using complex spreadsheets or financial reporting tools.

Salary:

Starting at $45,000 and is commensurate with relevant experience
