Job summary

Hornblower Group is seeking a First Mate to assist the Captain in mooring, operating, and maintaining vessels. You will help passengers board and disembark safely and support ship operations across various duties.

This role requires strong safety focus and excellent customer service in a dynamic maritime environment. Based in the United States, the position involves night, weekend, and holiday availability, with opportunities across Hornblower's City Experiences and Ferry divisions.

Qualifications

  • Must be able to lift furniture and other heavy items such as provisions up and down stairs.
  • TWIC credential required.
  • CPR/First Aid certification required.
  • Strong focus on safety and teamwork.
  • Must maintain organization and meet deadlines.
  • Able to handle multiple tasks and communicate effectively.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office software.
  • Able to communicate clearly with guests and coworkers.

Responsibilities

  • Stand bridge watch and assist in safe navigation and maneuvering.
  • Take command if captain becomes incapacitated.
  • Clean and maintain vessel.
  • Assign deck crew tasks and provide direction.
  • Supervise and perform routine shipboard maintenance.
  • Solve problems that come up.
  • Ability to run onboard drills.
  • Strong focus on customer service.
  • Maintain cleanliness and safety of all common areas.
  • Load or unload materials from vessels and handle lines to moor vessel.
  • Vessel maintenance including systems such as plumbing, electrical, and navigation.
  • Stand look-out watch on bow, stern, or bridge wings.
  • Operate and maintain engines, generators, HVAC, and bridge equipment.
  • Willing to be involved in shipyard periods.
  • Additional duties as assigned.
