Job Description

Primary Responsibility

The First Ascent Youth Leadership Camp Counselor is a seasonal, temporary position required for one to two weeks a year. The counselor will lead a group of 8-10 high school students through the annual CMC First Ascent Youth Leadership Program, facilitating opportunities and physical activities. Responsibilities include organizing and managing students, ensuring their safety, meeting their individual needs, and providing feedback to the Leadership Coordinator, Facilitators, and others regarding students and program concerns.

Additional Details

  • This is a part-time, seasonal role. As per the ACA guidelines, it does not include benefits typically provided to full-time employees. Employment duration and hours may vary according to seasonal needs. The hired individual will not hold other roles at CMC during the year and will be employed solely in this seasonal capacity to meet ACA requirements.

Qualifications

Applicants should have sufficient education and experience, such as a High School Diploma/GED and at least one year of related work experience (totaling 2080 hours, equivalent to one year of full-time work), including at least one week of summer camp. Candidates must be college students who have completed their freshman year or higher, or possess measurable related experience demonstrating the necessary skills and abilities.

Preferred Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of running leadership camps that foster leadership skills and outdoor appreciation.
  • Ability to turn experiences into learning opportunities and provide constructive feedback.
  • Experience working directly with counselors and campers to ensure an enjoyable experience.
  • Ability to perform vigorous physical activities in all weather conditions at high altitude (10,000’-14,000’).
  • Capacity to operate with limited rest over several days during the program.

Core principles include being welcoming, innovative, and student-focused. Applicants must demonstrate a commitment to working effectively with diverse backgrounds.

Bilingual abilities (English/Spanish) or conversational skills are preferred.

The pay rate is $18.71 per hour. Benefits include retirement contributions, paid time off, mental health resources, and tuition benefits. Compensation will be commensurate with experience and qualifications, in accordance with the Equal Pay for Equal Work Act.

Essential Duties

  • Manage and connect with a group to facilitate leadership skill development.
  • Form and oversee cohesive groups throughout the program.
  • Conduct experiential learning activities effectively.
  • Assist students in acquiring leadership skills.
  • Participate in vigorous physical activities.
  • Coordinate camp activities with Leadership Coordinators.
  • Relay student concerns and provide basic intervention and behavior management.
  • Ensure safety of staff and students.
  • Mentor other staff members.
  • Coordinate with the Leadville campus on housing, food, and activities.
  • Support program planning and execution.
  • Monitor duty coverage and provide supervision, guidance, and training.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Supervision and Conditions

Reports to the Youth Leadership Camp Facilitator and Admissions Representative. Supervises a group of 8-10 high school students. Must pass background and motor vehicle checks, hold a valid Colorado driver’s license, and adhere to safety policies. May require evening/weekend work, driving, and physical activity in outdoor conditions.
