Job Description: Firefighter/EMT/Paramedic

Under general supervision, performs advanced emergency response work in firefighting, emergency rescue, and hazardous material response. Responsibilities include:

1. Responding to emergency calls for fire suppression, medical assistance, hazardous materials incidents, and other emergencies.
2. Maintaining readiness for emergency response, including checking equipment and supplies.
3. Providing protection of life and property through fire suppression, rescue, and extrication.
4. Driving and operating emergency vehicles and apparatus safely.
5. Locating water supplies, operating hoses, and controlling fires.
6. Administering first aid and advanced medical care, including paramedic functions, stabilizing patients, and performing patient assessments.
7. Inspecting buildings for fire hazards and compliance with fire prevention ordinances.
8. Assisting law enforcement and other agencies as needed.
9. Operating and maintaining emergency and medical equipment.
10. Following safety procedures and performing general maintenance on equipment and station facilities.
11. Completing reports, logs, and maintaining records of activities.
12. Communicating effectively via radio and in person with team members and the public.
13. Engaging in public education and community outreach activities.
14. Maintaining professional knowledge through ongoing training and education.

Qualifications include a vocational/technical degree with training in fire suppression and emergency medicine, valid driver's license, and certifications such as Firefighter II, Paramedic, and HAZMAT operations. Additional certifications in EVOC, driver/pump operations, and technical rescue are required. Must meet all minimum qualifications as per Suffolk Fire & Rescue policies.

Knowledge requirements include understanding of firefighting equipment, emergency response hazards, medical procedures, and local geography. Skills include effective communication, problem-solving, operating emergency equipment, and working under stress. Ability to perform physically demanding tasks and establish effective working relationships is essential.

This role may serve as a back-up EMS supervisor and a preceptor for EMS skills. The position involves ongoing training, community interaction, and adherence to safety and operational protocols.
