Job summary

The City of Georgetown Fire Department is recruiting to establish an eligibility list for the Civil Service position of Firefighter/Paramedic. Duties include responding to fires, emergency medical and rescues; sustaining readiness and equipment; and training as required.

Exams are scheduled for Saturday, October 3, 2026 and Saturday, October 10, 2026 at the Public Safety Operations Training Center in Georgetown, TX. Applications close October 7, 2026.

Qualifications

  • Be able to read, write, and speak English.

Job description

The City of Georgetown is recruiting to establish an eligibility list for the Civil Service position of Firefighter/Paramedic. Duties will include responding to all fires, emergency medical and rescues & recovery alarms; sustaining high level of preparedness for emergencies; maintaining vehicles & equipment for fire suppression/prevention and for rescue & recovery. Subject to callback for emergencies, special training and/or other administrative reason.

The City of Georgetown Fire Department is providing qualified candidates with the option to participate in one (1) of two (2) written exam test date options for an upcoming Firefighter/Paramedic Entry Exam. Candidates can choose to participate in a written exam on Saturday October 3, 2026, OR Saturday October 10, 2026. Interested candidates may only participate in one (1) of the written exams available.

Applications will be accepted online until 11:59pm on Wednesday, October 7, 2026.

Minimum Qualifications:

Firefighter Paramedic Candidates must be a certified Basic Firefighter with the Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP), and a certified or licensed Paramedic through the Texas Department of State Health Services or the National Registry.

OR

Certified or licensed Paramedic through the Texas Department of State Health Services or the National Registry AND a minimum of one (1) year experience working in a 911 system at the time of the written examination.

An EMT-B through TDSHS is eligible to sit for the written examination if the candidate can prove, at the time of written examination, that they are successfully enrolled in a Paramedic program with an expected graduation date of no later than December 18, 2026.

Out of State Candidates - the candidate must be able to obtain Fire Certification through TCFP, and Paramedic certification through the Texas Department of State Health Services or the National Registry prior to the date of conditional offer.

Candidates must also:
  • Be at least eighteen (18) years of age on the date of the written exam, and not be forty-five (45) years of age or older at time of hire.
  • Be a graduate of an accredited high school or have an equivalency certificate (GED).
  • Be able to read, write, and speak the English language.
  • Be of good moral character.
  • Possess a valid Texas driver’s license within 60 days of hire unless extended by the Department Head.
  • Be legally eligible to work within the United States.
  • Be of good moral character.
  • Achieve a minimum passing score of seventy (70) percent on the written examination.
  • Pass a background Investigation.
  • Successfully complete the physical ability test.
  • Pass oral interviews.
  • Obtain or possess certifications consistent with this Fire Department hiring policy.
  • Successfully complete a post-job offer drug screen, psychological examination and medical examination that includes passing a visual acuity test, and physician certification that the applicant is not dependent on and does not use illegal drugs.
Skill in:
  • Reading operations manuals, safety procedures, training manuals, and other materials to maintain certification.
  • Writing reports and record-keeping.
  • Accurately record drug calculations and timesheets.
  • Understanding department procedures and policies.

Check-in will begin at 8:30 a.m., no one will be admitted into the testing facility after 9:00 a.m.

Completed Personal History Statements are due immediately following successful completion of the written examination.

Failure to return the completed packet along with required documents following the written exam will disqualify you as a candidate.

For applicants who wish to have military credit of five (5) points added to a passing test score of 70% or better, you must provide a copy of military discharge papers (DD214), member 4 copy, showing 1.) Honorable Discharge and 2.) A minimum of 180 total days of active military service.

In order to receive credit on the day of the exam you must bring a copy of your DD214 to the written examination.

Eligibility List Preference will be given to Firefighter/Paramedic candidates that meet the following requirements:

First Preference – Certified Basic Firefighter with the Texas Commission on Fire Protection, and Certified or Licensed Paramedic through the Texas Department of State Health Services or the National Registry at the time of the written examination.

Second Preference – Licensed Paramedic through the Texas Department of State Health Services or the National Registry AND a minimum of one (1) year experience working in a 911 system at the time of the written examination.

Salary Information

Effective October 5, 2026, the starting salary for Firefighter/Paramedic is $80,888 annually with additional stipends based on qualifications. (Includes Paramedic Credentialing pay in the amount of $6,400/year)

Lateral Pay:

Lateral pay is available and commensurate with experience. Lateral candidates hired under the program will be placed upon entry at the step schedule commensurate with their years of experience, up to and including step two (2).

Service time, for determining the starting salary can include multiple agencies, if breaks in service are less than thirty (30) days and all previous agencies meet the required criteria; the first year at each qualifying agency is considered probationary and not included in the calculation of experience.

Lateral pay is only available to those with at least two (2) years paid full-time experience as a Paramedic at a qualifying agency. The first year with the qualifying agency is considered probationary and shall not be included in the calculation of experience. And;In-state applicants must be certified by the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) at time of entry examination date, and out of state applicants must challenge and pass the DSHS Paramedic exam to obtain Texas State certification, before a conditional job offer is made by the Department Head. And;Must not have a break in service of more than one (1) year from the time the candidate left a qualifying agency to the entry examination date.
