Job description

The Town of East Hartford is seeking dedicated and courageous individuals to join our Fire Department as Firefighters. This is your chance to become part of a team that plays a vital role in protecting lives, property, and the community.
As a Firefighter, you will respond to emergency situations, including fires, medical emergencies, hazardous material incidents, and rescue operations. Your responsibilities will include firefighting, providing emergency medical care, performing rescue operations, and conducting fire prevention education. This role requires exceptional teamwork, quick decision-making, and a commitment to public safety.

The East Hartford Fire Department (EHFD) is a dynamic, full-service operation that serves over 50,000 residents from five strategically located fire stations. EHFD delivers fire protection, rescue operations, and advanced Paramedic EMS services utilizing 5 ALS Engines, 2 Ladders, 1 Heavy Rescue unit, and a Command Car. Each shift is supported by a minimum staffing of 26 dedicated personnel.

Paramedic Stipend: $1,000 Sign on Bonus upon hire – one time.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Respond to fire alarms alongside the fire company.
  • Execute complex tasks during life-threatening emergencies, both independently and as part of a team, to control or extinguish fires and mitigate other emergency conditions.
  • Provide immediate aid to injured individuals and assist in rescue operations during various emergencies.
  • Address medical emergencies by performing paramedic-related tasks, including assessing patients' conditions, communicating with the sponsor hospital, and accompanying or transporting patients when necessary.
  • Participate in drills focused on firefighting techniques and attend classes on firefighting, medical care, and related subjects.
Additional Job Functions:
  • Utilize manual and power tools during duty performance.
  • Conduct maintenance tasks for apparatus, quarters, building equipment, hydrants, and grounds.
  • Engage in fire surveys and inspections across different types of occupancies.
  • Clean, polish, oil, grease, and perform minor repairs on equipment.
  • Maintain station clerical records while serving on floor watch.
  • Document emergency incidents and patient information on designated forms.
  • Provide public education related to fire and EMS services.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Hold a high school diploma or GED.
  • Possess a State of Connecticut Paramedic License or National Registry Paramedic Certification.

OR

  • Provide proof of enrollment in a paramedic program recognized by the EHFD. A signed letter from the program director will suffice.

At the time of a job offer, candidates must provide the following:

·A CPAT (Candidate Physical Ability Test) or equivalent certification, with a test date within two calendar years preceding the job offer.

·A valid Connecticut Paramedic License or National Registry Paramedic Certification.

·A valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s License.
