Job description

SUMMARY:This is skilled public safety work involving the protection of life and property through emergency response of extinguishing various types of fires, assisting paramedics and law enforcement during other emergencies. Work involves a wide variety of technical tasks in support of fire prevention and suppression, medical emergency and hazardous materials handling functions; to operate and maintain a variety of fire and rescue apparatus and equipment; to perform investigative work and other special assignments; and to participate in fire prevention and station and equipment maintenance activities.Employees in this class are distinguished by the performance of the full range of duties assigned under the general supervision and by the performance of specialized work assigned. Employees at this experienced level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operational procedures and policies of the work unit having been trained such that they meet the current standards of a certified firefighter.

Responsibilities
  • Performs a variety of duties relating to fire prevention and suppression under immediate supervision.
  • Responds to emergency calls; provide appropriate services as required including emergency rescue and fire suppression; prepare reports regarding emergency incidents as assigned.
  • Drives and operates motor-driven equipment under special instructions and limited conditions and on a relief basis.
  • Operate, inspect, perform minor repair and preventative maintenance, and perform other technical tasks related to the apparatus and equipment of the Moss Point Fire Department.
  • Rescue trapped or injured people; provide necessary first aid in the absence of medical services personnel; operate numerous types of rescues, emergency and fire suppression equipment as necessary.
  • Participate in training to maintain the knowledge, skills and abilities required to meet the current standards for Firefighter covering the areas of fire alarms and communications, emergency medical care, fire behavior, rescue, safety, overhaul and inspections and the use of equipment and techniques including portable extinguisher, SCBA, forcible entry, ventilation, ropes, hoses, nozzles and appliances, fire streams and sprinklers, salvage, and the use of ladders and water supplies.
  • Performs general maintenance work in the upkeep of fire facilities and equipment; cleans and washes walls and floors; cares for grounds around station; makes minor repairs; washes, hangs and dries hose; washes, cleans, polishes, maintains and tests apparatus and equipment; ensure that appropriate conditions are maintained at assigned station; ensure that all equipment and apparatus is in a constant state of readiness for emergency calls.
  • Participate in a variety of fire prevention and operations activities and programs including training, fire investigations, code enforcement, oversight of the fire scene and equipment operation and maintenance; participate in activities and operations in response to natural disasters, major accidents, incidents involving hazardous materials, and other emergency situations.
  • Study street and apartment locations in assigned areas; study building plans and fire prevention systems in buildings in assigned areas; study pre-emergency plans.
  • May assume the duties of Firefighter when assigned; drive and operate apparatus and direct firefighting and rescue operations in this capacity and assume responsibility for assigned firefighting personnel and equipment.
  • Learn and use departmental computer equipment and input various data.
  • Give tours of assigned fire stations, demonstrate fire equipment and apparatus, and participate in other educational programs for various groups and public.
  • Performs other duties as determined by the Battalion Chief.
Qualifications
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must be certified as Firefighter I-II.
  • Minimum education of High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Possess a valid state driver's license or be able to obtain one by the time of hire.
  • Must be registered to vote in the county of residence.
  • Be of high moral character with no felony convictions or disqualifying criminal histories and of temperate and industrious habits.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Must be able to read and write the English Language.
