Job description

Under general supervision, is responsible for the prevention and suppression of fires that occur within the response jurisdiction. Performs operational functions for emergency response activities and light maintenance of equipment, apparatus and facilities. Participates in training with career and volunteer personnel in order to master fire suppression and hazard mitigation skills. Makes instant and precise decisions on life and death situations every day. Protects life and citizenship’s property. Performs emergency medical services to patients at fires, wrecks and any other accident scene. Prepares reports after call completions. Is responsible for maintaining vehicles. Work is performed in accordance with County and department regulations. Requires some independent judgment and technical knowledge. Reports to the Fire Service Lieutenant.

ESSENTIAL TASKS:

The tasks listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional tasks related to the type of work of the class as necessary.

• Assists in large scale evacuation as needed.
• Operates apparatus for response to and from operations at emergency scenes.
• Operates various hose streams at emergency scenes.
• Searches emergency scenes for trapped and/or injured victims. Rescues victims and performs life sustaining measures.
• Operates various types of power and hand tools as needed to locate and extinguish fires or reach victims.
• Aides and assists fellow firefighters on scene. Receives and carries out orders on emergency scenes as directed by the Incident Commander or his/her designee.
• Follows correct procedures of salvage operations to minimize damage to properties.
• Collects information at emergency scenes for fire reports.
• Disconnects utilities as necessary at emergency scenes.
• Utilizes all fire/rescue related equipment maintained in the Department’s inventory.
• Prepares equipment for the next call or emergency.
• Assists in planning and performance of Public Safety Programs.
• Has a working knowledge of a variety of fire protection systems relating to fire detection, notification and suppression.
• Writes informational letters.
• Completes various reports, forms, records, etc.
• Performs pre‑fire and life safety inspections for public buildings and target hazards.
• Operates in as safe a manner as possible and is alert to any conditions that might lead to accidents to the public or staff.
• Participates in training activities to improve department‑required knowledge, skills and abilities as directed by the Fire Chief.
• Cleans and maintains facility, vehicles and equipment.
• Trains with equipment and personnel.
• Implants fire prevention programs.
• Responds to non‑emergency incidents.
• Performs daily checks offs on all apparatus, pumps and equipment.
• Receives and reviews a variety of information to include daily training forms, fire run reports, life safety inspection forms, NFPA handbook, map book, orders from officers, SOP’s, SOG’s, personal information, test information, pre‑plan, classes, knowledge of geography and County rules and regulations.
• Prepares and/or generates a variety of information to include fire run reports, daily training reports, truck check reports, life safety inspector forms, preplan drawings, classes and pre‑plan.
• Refers to map book, NFPA handbook and the EMT field guide.
• Utilizes a variety of computer software such as pre‑incident planning software, incident reporting software, Microsoft Word, Excel, e‑mail, etc.
• Interacts and communicates with a wide variety of groups and individuals to include children, elderly, public, dispatch, Police, EMS and station crews.
• Utilizes and/or operates a variety of equipment and/or machinery to include a fire engine, fire engine pump, service vehicles, EMS equipment, extrication tools, etc.
• Utilizes a variety of tools and/or sets of tools such as extrication tools, chainsaw, axe, self‑contained breathing apparatus, turn out gear, hydraulic rescue tools, fire pumps, gas powered tools, etc.
• Attends training, meetings, seminars, and/or workshops to enhance job knowledge and skills.

ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

• May work with manufacturing plants in fire extinguisher training.
• Occasionally works with the high school for drunk driver awareness.
• Gives out fire prevention information to the public when requested.
• Assists public with changing batteries in smoke detectors.
• Performs walkthrough inspections of buildings and facilities and becomes familiar with layouts and features that could be potentially hazardous.
• Answers the phone and answers questions from the public.
• Assists with CPR classes within the public to help maintain certifications for businesses in the County.
• Assists with public education events.
• Helps with special events by providing fire and EMS support.
• Performs other related duties as required.

VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE PREPARATION:

• High school diploma or GED equivalent.
• Must possess a valid state driver's license.
• Must possess and maintain all required certifications.
