Job summary

WSP USA is seeking a Fire & Life Safety Engineering Intern - Summer 2027 to join our team across multiple locations, including Boston, MA, New York, NY, Columbia, MD, Arlington, VA, Dallas, TX and Houston, TX. This 12-week internship targets students currently enrolled in undergraduate or graduate Fire Protection Engineering programs.

You will assist with code research, system design, calculations, and field work under supervision, gaining hands-on experience and professional mentorship.

Qualifications

• Actively enrolled in an accredited Fire Protection Engineering program with anticipated graduation August 2027 or later.
• Must be 18 or older and authorized to work in the United States.
• Demonstrated interest in Fire Protection & Life Safety or related field and desire to advance skills for WSP’s work.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills for engineering and non-engineering audiences.
• Capable of taking direction from leadership and mentors to execute projects.
• Basic proficiency with technical writing, office software, and tools.

Responsibilities

• Research building code, life safety code, and fire code requirements (ICC and NFPA).
• Assist design of fire protection and life safety systems (sprinklers, detectors, alarms, smoke management, egress).
• Prepare fire engineering calculations including smoke modeling and evacuation analysis.
• Assist commissioning of fire alarm, suppression, smoke control, and life safety systems.
• Support review of architectural drawings for code compliance and contribute to design basis documents.
• Coordinate design efforts with multi-discipline teams and learn under supervision.
