Fire Protection Engineer — Mission Critical & Data Centers
Flowtec Group is partnering with an established multidisciplinary engineering consultancy to appoint a Fire Protection Engineer to support the design and delivery of complex, high-performance buildings across the mission critical, data center, life sciences and commercial sectors.
Our client has built a strong reputation for delivering technically challenging projects across the US, providing engineering design and consulting services for some of the most demanding building environments.
This is an opportunity to take ownership of complex fire protection and fire alarm designs, work directly with clients and project stakeholders, and play a key role in developing junior engineers within a growing engineering team.
What You'll Be Doing:
- Leading the design of fire protection and fire alarm systems across mission critical, data center, life sciences and commercial projects
- Developing detailed system layouts, technical specifications and equipment selections
- Designing sprinkler, standpipe, fire pump and clean agent suppression systems
- Performing hydraulic calculations using HydraCalc, AutoSPRINK or equivalent software
- Applying NFPA standards, FM Global requirements and relevant building and fire codes to complex engineering challenges
- Producing engineering studies, technical reports, system schematics and design documentation
- Reviewing contractor shop drawings for code compliance and design accuracy
- Conducting site surveys, construction inspections and coordinating with fire officials and contractors
- Working closely with mechanical, electrical and architectural teams to deliver coordinated designs
- Mentoring junior engineers and designers, reviewing technical work and supporting professional development
- Supporting project managers with design changes, project schedules and technical client discussions
What We're Looking For:
- Minimum 3 years of experience in fire protection and/or fire alarm engineering
- Experience designing fire protection systems for data centers, mission critical facilities, life sciences or complex commercial buildings
- Strong working knowledge of NFPA 13, 14, 20, 24, 25, 72 and 2001, alongside IBC, IFC and FM Global requirements
- Familiarity with NFPA 75 and 76 and data center fire protection design practices
- Experience with sprinkler and standpipe hydraulic calculations using HydraCalc, AutoSPRINK or Elite HASS
- Proficiency in Autodesk Revit and AutoCAD
- Strong understanding of mechanical and electrical building systems and multidisciplinary coordination
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Architecture or a related discipline from an ABET-accredited institution
- Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam completed; Professional Engineer (PE) licence preferred
- Excellent technical communication skills and the ability to work directly with clients, contractors and fire officials
- Experience mentoring junior engineers and managing multiple complex design assignments
Why This Role:
- Exposure to technically challenging mission critical and data center projects, alongside life sciences and high-performance commercial facilities
- Opportunity to take technical ownership of complex fire protection designs rather than simply supporting project delivery
- Clear career progression, including a structured pathway towards senior leadership and potential partnership
- Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP), providing an opportunity to share in the company's long-term success
- Flexible and hybrid working arrangements supporting work-life balance
- Comprehensive benefits, including retirement support, professional development and student debt repayment assistance
- Continued investment in technical training, mentorship and support towards professional engineering licensure
