Job summary

The role requires multiple NFPA certifications and several years of firefighting experience, along with a valid driver’s license.

The position emphasizes public education, coordination with other agencies, and essential operations, with duties including reports, training, and community outreach.

Qualifications

  • Three years of experience in a career fire service as a uniformed firefighter with Fire Fighter I & II and Kansas EMT certifications; NFPA 1031 Fire Inspector I certification within one year of appointment.
  • Five years of experience in a career fire service as a uniformed firefighter with Fire Fighter I & II and Kansas EMT certifications, with at least one year in a company officer role; Associate degree in fire, emergency medical science or related field; NFPA 1021 Fire Officer I, NFPA 1031 Fire Inspector I and NFPA 1041 Fire Instructor I certifications; completion of NFPA 1031 Plans Examiner and NFPA 1033 within one year of appointment.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.

Responsibilities

  • Leads, manages, plans and coordinates fire prevention, life safety and fire investigation activities within the Fire Prevention Division.
  • Coordinates activities with other divisions, departments, outside agencies and the public providing complex staff assistance.
  • Supervises, manages and coordinates programs and individuals in fire and life safety inspections according to codes and NFPA standards.
  • Prepares and participates in fire prevention, life safety programs and public fire education activities for businesses, schools and community groups.
  • Supervises the fire investigation program for origin and cause determinations and recommends training and credentialing for investigators.
  • Prepares and develops public education programs targeting community risks and trains personnel in fire prevention and emergency services.
