Job summary

CITY OF ELIZABETH CITY is seeking a Fire Inspector to enforce fire prevention standards and develop effective inspection methods. Working independently under limited supervision, you will report major activities through periodic meetings.

You will conduct inspections, document violations, enforce codes, prepare reports, and present cases in court. Obtain Level I/II Inspector certifications within specified timelines to advance in this role.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED; specialized fire prevention courses preferred.
• Ability to obtain and maintain licenses as required by the role.
• Experience or training in fire prevention and safety methods is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Inspect commercial, industrial, and other buildings for fire hazards and code compliance.
• Document and report violations of fire laws and safety standards.
• Enforce state and local fire codes through plan reviews and interactions with customers.
• Prepare regular and special inspection reports.
• Inspect fire alarm systems, extinguishing equipment, and flammables storage.
• Inspect tanks and storage on properties for regulatory compliance.
• Inspect new buildings for compliance with rules and regulations.
• Review license requests for fire code compliance.
• Prepare and present cases in court to enforce fire prevention laws.
• Address hazards related to construction and storage of combustibles.
• Perform related duties as needed.
